Is this iOS controller the future of gaming? ? Video Games Reviews ...

Gaming on iOS has come a long way. Yet despite the advances that the A5 processor has brought, there is one potentially huge obstacle to enjoying a console-like experience on the iPhone or iPad: touchscreen controls. Developers have done the best that they can with the medium, crafting virtual analog sticks and swipe gestures for camera panning. Yet it still doesn?t compare to the tried-and-true experience of using a physical controller. A company called 60beat is trying to change that with a new controller that is compatible with iOS devices.

If you thought that this controller would be of the Bluetooth wireless variety, you?d be wrong. The 60Beat GamePad connects through, of all places, the headphone jack (a 4-foot headphone cable, to be exact). The controller is nearly a spitting image of current generation console and PC controllers, with two analog sticks, D-pad, and ten action buttons (including the two analog joysticks).

An accessory like the GamePad will live and die by its software support (or lack thereof). Right now, the picture isn?t pretty: it?s only supported by two games. Making matters worse, they probably aren?t games you?ll want. It?s supported by children?s game Bugdom 2 and top-down zombie shooter Aftermath (iPhone only).

60Beat promises on its website that more titles will be coming in February. For its sake, let?s hope it?s lining up some top-notch developers, because nobody is going to buy a $50 accessory that only supports a couple of second-tier games.

With that said, the potential for the GamePad ? or something similar ? is huge. This is particularly the case when you consider AirPlay. Using a controller to play on your phone or tablet might be a bit awkward, but when you?re streaming it via AirPlay to a 56-inch HDTV, you have a new gaming console.

Gaming is an area where Apple has loads of untapped potential. Sure, Angry Birds and Cut the Rope keep legions of casual gamers happy, but with the A6 processor (that will probably arrive within a few months with the iPad 3), iOS gaming will take another leap forward. The gap between mobile and console gaming will shrink even more. If Apple wants to, it could recruit major developers, release its own controller, and turn the console gaming industry upside down.

If OnLive?s iPad app ever gets approved, it will beat Apple to the punch. The cloud gaming service lets gamers play PC games like Batman: Arkham City, L.A. Noire, and Deus Ex: Human Revolution on mobile devices. It also offers a controller, though it connects via Bluetooth. The app?s release has been delayed, so perhaps Apple does have some gaming plans ? and sees OnLive as a threat.

In the meantime, we?ll keep an eye on the 60Beat GamePad and see if it gets enough software support to make it worth its $50 price tag.

5 police face torture charges in Mexico City case

The Mexico City prosecutors' office says five police officers have been arrested in connection with a video that appears to show the abuse of a suspect.

Milenio Television reported last month that one of its reporters had taken the video of an officer repeatedly pushing the man's head into a bucket of water while his T-shirt was pulled up over his head and face.

The alleged abuse took place following a shootout between police and gunmen in the working-class neighborhood of Tepito. The video's authenticity could not be independently confirmed, and neither Milenio nor police released the suspect's identity.

The Mexico City prosecutor's office said in a statement that five officers had been placed under house arrest for 30 days while it seeks preliminary charges of torture.

Adele sells most albums in a year since 2004

That Adele's "21" will rank as the year's top-selling album is no surprise ? the English singer-songwriter's hits "Rolling in the Deep" and "Someone Like You" dominated playlists in 2011. What is surprising is that "21," released by independent British label XL Recordings, sold more than 5 million copies.

The last time an album topped the year-end chart with more than 5 million copies sold was in 2004, when Usher's "Confessions" moved 7.9 million, according to Nielsen Soundscan, which supplied all sales data for this story.

Indeed, music sales overall are expected to end 2011 up more than 3 percent from last year. Not coincidentally, the last time overall music sales rose by so much was in 2004 as well.

The resurgence in sales is welcome news for the music industry. A meager 1 percent increase in digital sales last year created widespread panic that the format had already plateaued.

Nielsen analyst David Bakula attributed the rebound to a strong release slate, plus retailers getting more aggressive with pricing and promotions.

For instance, Lady Gaga's album "Born This Way" was priced at 99 cents ? less than one-tenth the price of most albums ? in a special deal, helping drive sales beyond her core fans, he said. The promotion on Amazon.com angered other retailers who were selling the album at full price, however.

"In 2004, you had one massive album driving sales," said Bakula, senior vice president of entertainment analytics for Nielsen. "This year is similar in that you have one really great story that everyone is talking about."

Digital sales are expected to end 2011 close to 10 percent higher, prompting Bakula to proclaim the sales performance "a great resurgence."

Physical albums still outsell digital albums by a 2:1 margin. But total music sales, which would include digital singles, are now split 50-50 between physical and digital.

Topping 5 million
To put Adele's sales figures in context, the more than 3.5 million physical albums she sold this year would have been good enough to take the top spot in each of the last three years without even adding in digital sales. Album sales include LPs, compact discs and digital albums.

Figures for the year's best-selling album declined every year from 2004 to 2008. They hit an all-time low in 2008 when Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter III" took the top spot with sales of just 2.9 million, the first time an album claimed the best-seller title with sales of less than 3 million.

Since 2008, however, sales of the top-selling album of the year have increased, though not by much. Taylor Swift took the top spot in 2009, selling 3.2 million copies of "Fearless." Eminem's "Recovery" finished 2010 as the year's best-seller with 3.4 million copies.

"Adele's performance this year shows the demand for great original music," Bakula said. "Here's an artist that had moderate success before, but nothing of this magnitude, and she's doing it all on two singles."

Amy Winehouse's death from alcohol poisoning in July also factored into Adele's sales performance. Bakula said the attention Winehouse's death received stoked interest among fans to sample other soulful, jazz-infused female British singer-songwriters, like Adele and Duffy. As a result, in addition to buying "21," consumers dipped into Adele's back catalog, making her prior release, "19," one of the year's top 25 best-sellers.

Still, Adele's sales total is less than half of the more than 11 million copies that "No Strings Attached" from N'Sync sold in 2000. That year marked the last time the top spot featured an album that sold in excess of 10 million, underscoring the dramatic impact that legitimate digital distribution channels like Apple's iTunes and illegal file-sharing sites such as Limewire have had on the music industry.

Adopt-A-Soldier program shines: El Paso families open their hearts to troops

Soldiers Jasmine and Justin Miller, at right, spent Christmas day with the Stricklin family, Mia, 9, left, Aiden,2, and Helen and Bill in Northeast El Paso. (Vanessa M Feldman / El Paso Times)

Staff Sgt. Bill Stricklin grew up in a military family so it's only natural that he would want to participate in the Army's Adopt-A-Soldier program during the holidays.

Stricklin and his wife, Helen, hosted a married Army couple -- Spc. Justin and Pfc. Jasmine Miller -- at their house on post Sunday for Christmas dinner and other fun activities.

"I saw how Dad's senior leaders took care of him and our family," Stricklin said. "It seems only the right thing to do the same for others."

Stricklin, with Operation Test Command, said they've been part of the Adopt-A-Soldier program every year he's been stationed stateside during his 15 1/2-year Army career -- either as adoptees or as a host family.

For the past nine years, they've been hosts. One year while at Fort Benning, Ga., they had 30 guests over, Helen Stricklin said.

"I don't know if I could be comfortable knowing there were people sitting home alone," she said.

In El Paso, 45 families hosted more than 100 troops and their families for Christmas this year, according to post officials.

This program is closely aligned with the White House's Joining Forces initiative to get communities involved with supporting service members and their families, said Bliss spokesman Maj. Myles Caggins. Hundreds of other soldiers were informally adopted by the leaders in their units, he added.

"Adopt-A-Soldier strengthens the ties between Fort Bliss and El Paso and it gives individuals a chance to thank service members for

their sacrifices," Caggins said.

Soldiers from the Michigan and Massachusetts Army National Guard also participated. They are at Fort Bliss training for deployment.

Bill Stricklin doesn't consider it to be a duty or some big responsibility to host other soldiers during the holidays.

"It's a matter of giving back," he said.

The Millers, who are both from New York state, said they were thrilled to be taking part.

They were planning a trip to Albuquerque to visit some family but that was canceled at the last minute because of concerns over snowy weather that hit the region.

"This is so awesome," Jasmine Miller said. "We were really in the Christmas spirit and didn't want to sit at home -- just me and him. We do that every day."

Everyone they know had gone home for the holidays or already had plans, she added.

Helen Stricklin started cooking Saturday night. She made turkey, ham, a pork shoulder roast, Southern-style stuffing or dressing, homemade mashed potatoes and other yummy-sounding dishes.

She considers herself to be a Georgia native, but also has strong ties to El Paso. She went to Ysleta High School for two years and her mom is from the Sun City.

Besides dinner, the Stricklins planned a white elephant gift exchange and other Christmas games.

"After the turkey kicks in, I'm sure we'll be lounging around watching TV," Helen Stricklin said.

Justin Miller said he was also happy to be a part of the Adopt-A-Soldier program.

"We're hoping we'll be doing this soon at our house" and hosting other soldiers, he said.

Last year, the Millers had gotten back from being deployed in Iraq the week before Christmas.

"We were sitting around an empty apartment in Germany with nothing, no furniture," Jasmine Miller said. "We weren't sad or anything. We were just glad not to be in Iraq."

The Stricklins have been at Fort Bliss since this July, while the Millers have been here since May.

"We really love it here," Jasmine Miller said. "We love the outdoors. We love having a view of the mountains from our backyard."

Species spotted at deep-sea vent

The team used an underwater robot to film the creatures living around the hydrothermal vent (Footage: University of Southampton)

Remarkable images of life from one of the most inhospitable spots in the ocean have been captured by scientists.

Researchers have been surveying volcanic underwater vents - sometimes called black smokers - in the South West Indian Ridge in the Indian Ocean.

The UK team found an array of creatures living in the super-heated waters, including yeti crabs, scaly-foot snails and sea cucumbers.

They believe some of the species may be new to science.

Hydrothermal vents were first discovered in 1977. These fissures in the ocean floor spew out fiercely hot, mineral-rich water, yet somehow, diverse ecosystems are able to thrive in these hostile conditions.

The team, from the University of Southampton, was particularly interested in the vents on the South West Indian Ridge because this range is linked to the Mid Atlantic Ridge and the Central Indian Ridge, where vent life has been well documented.

This area is also unusual because it is an "ultra-slow spreading" ridge, which means it is less volcanically active than other ridges, with fewer vents that are further apart.

Dr Jon Copley, chief scientist of the Indian Ocean vents project, said: "This place is a real crossroads in terms of the vent species around the world."

Using a remote-operated, underwater robot called Kiel 6000, from the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences (IFM Geomar), in Germany, the team was able to train their cameras on the vents.

In the hottest habitat around the black smokers, they found snails and shrimp, as well as mussels, sea cucumbers and crabs. They then compared these with the animals found at vents on the neighbouring ridges.

Dr Copley said: "I was expecting there to be some similarities to what we know from the Atlantic, and some similarities to what we know from the Indian Ocean vents, and that was true, but we also found types of animals here which are not known from either of those neighbouring areas, and that was a big surprise.

"One was a type of yeti crab. There are two currently described species of yeti crab known from the Pacific, and it isn't like those, but it is the same type of animal, with long, hairy arms.

"Also some sea cucumbers - not known from the Atlantic or Central Indian vents, but known from the Pacific."

He added: "We've got links to lots of different parts of the world here, which is very exciting."

The team was also surprised at the diversity of life they found during this expedition, which was funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (Nerc).

Dr Copley said: "In a lot of other vent fields I've been to, in this hot zone where you get the animals there is often just one type of animal living there: in the deep Mid Atlantic Ridge, it's the shrimp. But here, we have seen three to four all in the same zone."

The findings should help researchers to learn more about how life moves from vent to vent: vents are short lived, and without the ability to hop from one system to the next, life there would go extinct.

"That is why vents are a great place to understand how species disperse and evolve in the deep oceans, because they are like little islands," Prof Copley added.

Despite these findings, the researchers are worried about the future of this underwater terrain.

China has been granted an exploratory licence by the International Seabed Authority to explore the potential of mining the vents in this area for their rich minerals.

Dr Copley said: "This vent field is the size of a few football pitches, and it seems possible that it is the only known range of some of these species.

"It would be very premature to start disrupting it before we really know the true extent of what lives in it."

Analysis: Russia's Putin risks losing touch amid protests (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? Vladimir Putin is looking increasingly out of touch in Russia after the opposition brought tens of thousands of people out onto the streets of Moscow for the second time in two weeks to demand a parliamentary election be re-run.

But the looming New Year holiday in Russia means there is likely to be a pause in the biggest opposition protests since he rose to power 12 years ago and he will hope they will now at least temporarily lose momentum.

The protesters say they are tired of his domination of Russia after eight years as president and now four as prime minister, and suspect the December 4 election, won by his United Russia party, was rigged.

First Putin dismissed the protesters as chattering monkeys financed from abroad, then he backed President Dmitry Medvedev's proposal for gradual political reform and later the 59-year-old leader had a former KGB spy appointed as Kremlin chief of staff.

The gulf between Putin and many of his people has convinced many that he has lost his popular touch and is refusing to take the protests as seriously as many of his closest allies do as he prepares to reclaim the presidency in an election in March.

"They do not understand," one person close to policy makers said of Putin and Medvedev. "One is weak and the other does not want to listen, though people have tried to explain the seriousness of the situation."

That could bode badly for the long-term stability of the world's biggest country and energy producer.

Opponents say Putin's inner circle is a small group of former KGB spies, businessmen and Kremlin officials who have little empathy with the Internet-savvy generation of younger, urban Russians who have come out onto the streets this month.

But Putin's portrayal of the protesters as pawns financed by a foreign power has also contrasted with the conclusions drawn by some of the other men at his court.

Kremlin deputy chief of staff Vladislav Surkov, who helped Putin craft his tightly controlled political system, warned on Friday that some enemies wanted to provoke a revolution but that the protesters were among the best people in society.

PUTIN'S COURT

"The best part of our society, or rather the most productive part, is demanding respect," Surkov, one of Putin's most powerful advisers on domestic policy, told Izvestia. "You cannot simply swipe away their opinions in an arrogant way."

An even closer Putin ally, former Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin, joined Saturday's protest in Moscow, warning that Russia needed much more serious political reforms to ensure a stable development.

"I came today because I do not believe the elections were fair and I believe we need to hold an investigation and punish those responsible up to and including criminal responsibility," Kudrin, 51, told Reuters at the protest.

"There is a possibility today, without any sort of revolution, to make a transformation to ensure fair elections and real representation in parliament," said Kudrin, who helped Putin get his first job in the Kremlin in 1996.

But Putin has other powerful advisers too.

Nikolai Patrushev, the powerful head of the Russian security council and former head of the FSB state security service, said this month that Russia should impose "rational regulation" of the Internet.

Another former KGB spy, Sergei Ivanov, was appointed Kremlin chief of staff on Thursday and Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin, a Putin ally, has voiced concern about the role played by the Internet in the Arab Spring revolts.

Patrushev, 60, Ivanov, 58, and Sechin, 51, are all old friends of Putin and though they may be divided by tactics and court politics, they are ultimately hardliners.

Medvedev, Russia's 46-year-old iPad-carrying president, may have more sense of the anger against Putin but he is weak, sources close to the situation said.

"Medvedev understands this all a little better because he is a person less prone to conspiratorial theories," said a source with close ties to the leadership, adding that Russia's leaders were hoping the protests would burn themselves out.

"Putin has realized his popularity is declining," the source said.

PUTIN'S POPULARITY

For Putin, who has used his popularity to justify his plan to run for the presidency in the March 4 presidential election, that may be a hard thing to accept.

Putin still remains Russia's most popular politician and though his ratings are high by Western standards, they are low according to Putin's own expectations.

Russia's biggest independent pollster, Levada-Center, said 63 percent of Russians approved of his activities as prime minister in a poll carried out on Dec 16-20.

But that is just three percentage points above the lowest level since August 2000, when he was dogged by the botched reaction to a naval disaster that killed all 118 crewmen aboard the submarine Kursk.

"They are worrying and they are nervous," said Mikhail Kasyanov, who served as prime minister under Putin for four years before joining the opposition. "And they really do have something to be worried and nervous about."

CHATTERING MONKEYS?

Putin seems intent on riding out the protests. While tens of thousands turned out for the second time on two weeks on Saturday, he is likely to take comfort from the fact that there was not a huge increase in the numbers.

Tens of thousands protested in cities across Russia on December 10. On Saturday, organizers said they had gathered 120,000 in Moscow though the police put the number at 30,000.

The truth may lie somewhere in between: Russia's Navaya Gazeta opposition newspaper said its reporters counted more than 102,000 while estimates from state news agency RIA put the crowd at about 56,000.

Putin appears to reason that even though the protests are much larger than any he has faced before, it is still a relatively small percentage of the population that is protesting in a country of more than 140 million.

He is counting on the support of the many millions in the provinces who regard him as the man who restored order to Russia after the chaos of the decade that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

In a televised question and answer session with the Russian people, Putin used a reference to the chattering monkeys known as "Bandar Log" in Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book to describe the protesters and said he thought the white ribbons which are the symbol of the election protests were condoms.

But Alexei Navalny, the most prominent leader of the divided opposition groups which refuse to negotiate with the Kremlin, turned Putin's comments back against the authorities.

"Hi all of you Bandar Logs and Internet hamsters: You were called Bandar Log but you came here today. But where is the chap who called us that?" Navalny, 35, told tens of thousands of people at the protest in Moscow's Sakharov Avenue.

Navalny's satire may excite the crowds and the thousands who read his blogs but there is still no leader of the fragmented opposition. As if to illustrate that, dozens of different leaders addressed the crowd in Moscow.

United or not, Navalny warned that there were enough people at the protest to take the Kremlin by force, though he quickly added that this was not the plan.

"If the authorities continue to cheat the people and thieves and if those two swindlers continue the usurpation of power - they have stolen it from the people - then the people will come and take it back because it is theirs by rights," he told Reuters.

So does he plan a revolution?

"It is not a revolution," he said. "The revolution, the illegal takeover of power, was implemented by Putin and Medvedev. Here there will be a legal return of power to the people."

Former Syracuse University punter Rob Long leaves cancer behind ...

The brown hair has long since grown back.

And the smile? Well that never really left Rob Long?s face, except maybe at times during the darkest hours in his battle with a malignant brain tumor.

It?s been a year since the former Syracuse University punter, kick-holder and special teams captain learned that the tumor doctors removed Dec. 14, 2010, contained cancerous cells. It?s been almost a year since he began radiation treatments and oral chemotherapy.

Meanwhile, the Downingtown, Pa., resident continues to show no further signs of cancer. There?s no trace of the tumor doctors removed at Jefferson University hospital in Philadelphia.

Long finished his degree in marketing management at SU, traveled across the country twice, spent time with his girlfriend, completed an internship with Philadelphia-area chemical shipping company ? and he?s still chasing his dream of becoming an NFL punter.

?I feel great,? said Long, who turned 23 on Dec. 13. ?I?m very thankful for the way I feel and what I?m able to do still ? working out and pursuing dreams of punting in the NFL. That?s all special to me.?

Though his college career ended several games early, after his tumor was discovered Dec. 2, 2010, Long never wavered in his determination to kick at football?s highest level.

A two-time All-Big East selection as a punter (first-team in 2009 and second-team last year), Long?s career average of nearly 44 yards a kick made him a solid candidate to be signed by an NFL team for spring camp.

But the surgery ? followed by six weeks of radiation treatments that ended in early March and topped by an extended lockout of players that canceled nearly all offseason activities except the NFL Draft ? conspired to keep him on the sidelines this year.

?It hurt me tremendously,? Long said of the owners? lockout, which dragged into summer and didn?t end until late July, just in time for the preseason.

Save for a pre-draft tryout with his hometown Philadelphia Eagles, and a pair of one-day looks by Cleveland and Tampa Bay during the preseason, Long said no other teams called.

?A lot of teams told my agent they were interested, but with what I was going through they needed more than a day to see me before they made a decision. A lot of them kind of shied away, just a wait-until-next-year kind of a deal,? he said.

So Long is waiting until next year. In early January he?ll leave the Philadelphia suburbs and head south to Florida, where he?ll spend the rest of that month and part of February kicking and training full-time in an effort to earn an invite to a team?s mini-camp in March.

Long said the plan is for him to train in good weather while his agent tries to get teams to watch him work out and perhaps sign him. ?That way I?ll be able to join a team for an offseason,? he said.

Until then, Long will spend the next few weeks with his family and girlfriend, Jacqueline Russer, who now lives and works in the Philadelphia area. He?s training, and kicking, and enjoying a holiday season that wasn?t so merry last year.

?Christmas will be fun,? he said. ?Last year I couldn?t even really tell you what happened. Honestly, I don?t even remember Christmas last year.?

Long also has become a poster boy for Jefferson?s Kimmel Cancer Center, which made him the subject of ads that appeared this month in the New York Times and Philadelphia Inquirer.

Long said the photo shoot for the ad was a different experience.

?They made me put on makeup. They gave me the whole rundown ... makeup, hair, everything,? he said.

But it was a small inconvenience compared to what he endured a year ago.

It?s a battle Long appears to have emerged from both victorious and with a new resolve to chase a dream that cancer couldn?t crush.

?I?m pretty determined,? said Long, adding that he?s not prepared to quit ? even if the NFL turns him away again this year. ?It?s going to take time for them to tell me no.?

India, Australia look to narrow gap with England

Calcutta (The Telegraph): Australia and India will aim to a narrow the gap with No.1-ranked England in the Reliance ICC Test Championship table when they lock horns in a four-Test series, which starts in Melbourne, on Monday.

If India make a sweep of the four-Test series, they will move to 122 ratings points.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni's side currently sit in the second place on 118 ratings points. That is seven ratings points behind Andrew Strauss' side.

Michael Clarke's men are in the fourth position on 103 ratings points. Third-ranked South Africa, who are currently playing a three-Test series against Sri Lanka, are on 116 points. The Proteas lead the sixth-ranked Sri Lankans 1-0 in the series.

In such a scenario, shuffling of the pack in the middle of the Championship table could be on the cards, depending on how the series Down Under (which finishes on January 28) and the one in South Africa (which finishes on January 7) pan out, according to an ICC media release, on Saturday.

If Australia win all the four Tests, they will jump to 111 ratings points and India will drop to 111 ratings. But India would still be ranked above Australia by a fraction of a point.

In case of a 3-1 win for Australia, the home side will rise to 108 ratings points and India will drop to 113 ratings points.

If the series turns out to be a 2-2 draw, it will mean Australia will gain two ratings points and India will drop two.

However, in a sharp contrast, if India make a sweep of the four-Test series, they will move to 122 ratings points and will narrow the gap with England to just three points. A 3-1 victory for India will put them on 120 ratings points, dropping Australia to 101 ratings points.

In case of a 2-1 series win, Dhoni?s side will earn one ratings points.

In the player rankings for Test batsmen, India's Sachin Tendulkar, who is one century short of becoming the first batsman to score 100 international centuries, is the highest-ranked batsman from either side in sixth position. The Master trails Pakistan's Younis Khan by four ratings points.

India also boast Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and Virender Sehwag inside the top 20, while Michael Hussey and Clarke are the only two Australia batsmen inside the top 20, in 17th and 18th positions, respectively.

Zaheer Khan of India in sixth position and Australia's Peter Siddle in 12th position will be spearheading their respective bowling attacks.

Ishant Sharma, Ben Hilfenhaus, Ravichandran Ashwin, James Pattinson and Nathan Lyon are the other bowlers inside the top 50 and they will certainly hope to improve their rankings.

Though they are related to both Spiders and Scorpions, Solifugids do not have venom and they are not considered dangerous to humans.? Solifugids are sometimes called Sun Spiders or Wind Scorpions.? Solifugids are generally found in arid climates and species from the Middle East which are known as Camel Spiders can grow quite large.? It appears that your Solifugid might have been smashed as evidenced by what appears to be bodily fluids at the end of the abdomen.? If this is the case, we would like to educate you regarding the benefits of this harmless, nocturnal hunter.?? Though they appear to be frightening, Solifugids are not harmful to human or pets, unless you keep small arthropods as pets.? It is possible that a Solifugid might bite a human if they are carelessly handled, but since there is no venom involved, the bite is harmless.? If they are present in or near your home, Solifugids will help to control the population of Cockroaches and other creatures that you might find undesirable.?

Cancer
Due towards the proliferation regarding cancer cells is abnormal. Body regarding grown-up human being consists of a huge selection of huge amounts of tissue. Each and every second, billions of these kinds of cells die and so are replaced simply by huge amounts of brand-new cellular material. And also replicate new tissues via a procedure for separation. With this method, the particular cellular splits and two cells resemble. And then double size of these kinds of cellular material and be able to change separation. And also replenish normal cellular material with the same degree necessary to exchange the lifeless tissues, although cancer tissues proliferate from the divorce, however will not be able to breed with a normal fee. Might be a number of non-cancerous tumors or even cancerous cancer . This sort of tumor won?t propagate to the encircling wholesome muscle or to other areas from the entire body. The malignant growths Vngzo the nearby balanced tissues, as well as targeted this, and finally fully damaged cancer cures .

Why is it crucial that you identify the condition first? House GOP unveils $1 trillion spending bill (AP)

WASHINGTON ? House Republicans have unveiled a massive $1 trillion-plus yearend spending package despite a plea from the White House for additional talks over a handful of provisions opposed by President Barack Obama.

The measure unveiled late Wednesday curbs agency budgets but drops many policy provisions sought by GOP conservatives.

But it contains language to roll back Obama administration policies that had loosened restrictions on the rights of Cuban immigrants to send money to relatives in Cuba or travel back to the island to visit them. Earlier this year, the White House promised a veto over the restrictions on travel and gifts, which are supported by many in the GOP-leaning Cuban-American community, a powerful political force in the swing state of Florida.

The spending measure had been held up by Senate Democrats seeking leverage in talks on extending payroll tax cuts and unemployment insurance ? two pillars of Obama's jobs agenda.

But Democratic leverage to stall the massive spending measure seems limited, since it raises the threat of a government shutdown.

Release of the legislation ? to meet GOP transparency rules if a vote is to be held Friday ? came just a couple of hours after the White House issued a statement saying that Obama "continues to have significant concerns about a number of provisions" in the legislation.

White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer called for another stopgap funding bill to buy time for talks on both the spending bill and the payroll tax measure.

Stopgap funding runs out Friday at midnight.

The underlying bill has bipartisan backing but could encounter turbulence with tea party lawmakers seeking far more significant cuts to government agencies. The measure funds the day-to-day operating budgets of 10 Cabinet departments and programs ranging from border security to flood control to combating AIDS and famine in Africa.

Democrats have yet to officially sign onto the measure, though top lawmakers in the party ? including Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii ? are on board.

Given White House concerns, changes are still possible before a vote.

On spending, the measure implements this summer's hard-fought budget pact between President Barack Obama and Republican leaders. That deal essentially freezes agency budgets, on average, at levels that were approved back in April for the recently completed budget year.

The bill chips away at the Pentagon budget, foreign aid and environmental spending but boosts funding for veterans programs. The Securities and Exchange Commission, responsible for enforcing new regulations under last year's financial overhaul, won a 10 percent budget increase, even as the tax-collecting IRS absorbs a more than 3 percent cut to its budget.

Popular education initiatives for special-needs children and disadvantaged schools were basically frozen and Obama's cherished "Race to the Top" initiative, which provides grants to better-performing schools, would absorb a more than 20 percent cut.

Environmentalists scored clear wins in stopping virtually every significant GOP initiative to roll back Environmental Protection Agency rules. Most importantly, industry forces seeking to block new greenhouse gas and clean air rules, as well as a new clean water regulation opposed by mountaintop removal mining interests, were denied. But Republicans succeeded in blocking new energy efficiency standards for light bulbs and won delays to a new Labor Department rule requiring a reduction of coal dust responsible for black lung disease.

Drafted behind closed doors, the proposed bill would provide $115 billion for overseas security operations in Afghanistan and Iraq but give the Pentagon just a 1 percent boost in annual spending not directly related to the wars. The Environmental Protection Agency's budget would be cut by 3.5 percent. Foreign aid spending would drop and House lawmakers would absorb a 6 percent cut to their office budgets.

On spending, the measure generally consists of relatively small adjustments to thousands of individual programs. Agencies like the Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement will get a boost within the Homeland Security Department, while GOP defense hawks won additional funding to modernize the U.S. nuclear weapons arsenal. The troubled, over-budget, next-generation F-35 fighter plane program would be largely protected.

Social conservatives won a ban on government-funded abortions in Washington, D.C., and restored a longstanding ban on U.S. funding for needle exchange programs used to prevent the spread of HIV. But efforts to take away federal funding for Planned Parenthood failed, as expected.

To placate conservatives, $8 billion for disaster aid will be addressed in a separate bill, though on a parallel track to the omnibus measure.

It's a sticky issue for conservatives because approving the disaster aid would bring the total amount of money allotted for agency budgets above last year's budgets. By putting the aid in a separate bill, the GOP can lean heavily on Democrats to pass it.

Recession Hurt Parent-Child Ties, Survey Finds (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Dec. 15 (HealthDay News) -- The recent recession took a toll on parent-child ties, with parents who were under financial strain reporting that they felt less connected to their kids and kids saying they were less likely to act with generosity, a new study finds.

Researchers from University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Brigham Young University analyzed data from a survey done in 2009 and then again a year later of about 500 families in the Seattle area about their feelings of depression, economic stress and family relationships.

The families were mostly white, middle- to upper-middle-class and college educated. The children were young adolescents, aged 10 to 14.

From one year to the next, parents who reported increasing financial pressure were also more likely to report symptoms of depression, according to the study. In turn, depressed parents were more likely to report feeling less connected and less close with their child.

Likewise, parental financial strain and depression also affected the children. Children whose parents were struggling were less likely to say they volunteered, helped their friends or their families, found enjoyment in doing small favors for others, or tried to cheer up people who were feeling blue -- a group of positive behaviors researchers call "pro-social behaviors."

"The effects of the economic strain are present and having an impact on families that we consider middle-class and upper-middle-class," said lead study author Gustavo Carlo, currently a professor of human development and family studies at the University of Missouri. "These are families you'd think maybe aren't feeling the effects of the economic crisis in the way that other communities are, or that might have access to resources that other families might not have easy access to."

And the families interviewed were from the Seattle area, which wasn't even as hard hit during the downturn as other regions of the country, Carlo added. "One can only imagine how these effects are being felt by families in areas where the communities have really suffered tremendously from the economic situation," he said.

The study appears online and in the December print issue of the Journal of Research on Adolescence.

To be sure, not every parent experiencing economic strain will become anxious and depressed, said Velma McBride Murry, a professor of human and organizational development at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.

"If you enter this situation having an increased vulnerability to depression and anxiety, economic strain elevates it, or sets it off to where you are more likely to experience greater devastation than people who are much more mentally stable," Murry said.

But the current study adds to a large body of evidence that cuts across income levels and racial and ethnic groups and shows that economic stress can have a "cascading effect" on the whole family, Murry said. When under financial stress, parents who are used to being able to give their children a cellphone or new clothes suffer mentally when they can no longer do so. As money worries mount -- they're not sure they can pay the mortgage, or the utility bill, or a medical expense that comes in -- parents can become overwhelmed, irritable, short-tempered, depressed and withdrawn.

"Then it erodes communication in the family, and reduces the connectedness that parents have with their children," Murry said.

The kids feel it, too, and their attitudes and behavior can also suffer. Prior research has shown that the kids aren't bothered by the loss of the material goods -- the new cellphone or the clothes -- but by the impact it's having on their family, she added.

"Prior studies have found that kids will say, 'it's not the stuff that I miss. I miss my relationship with my parents. That has shifted and the environment in my family has shifted,'" Murry said.

Parents who are feeling economically strained and depressed should seek out emotional support, whether it's from family and friends, their church or from a mental health professional, Carlo urged.

"They may have to pay some extra attention to work on the quality of the relationship with their child," he said.

Astronomers determine how the brightest and closest stellar explosion in 25 years blew up

PASADENA, Calif. It was the brightest and closest stellar explosion seen from Earth in 25 years, dazzling professional and backyard astronomers alike. Now, thanks to this rare discoverywhich some have called the "supernova of a generation"astronomers have the most detailed picture yet of how this kind of explosion happens. Known as a Type Ia supernova, this type of blast is an essential tool that allows scientists to measure the expansion of the universe and understand the very nature of the cosmos.

"What caused these explosions has divided the astronomical community deeply," says Shri Kulkarni, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Professor of Astronomy and Planetary Sciences. But this new supernovadubbed SN2011fecan help astronomers solve this longstanding mystery. "SN2011fe is like the Rosetta Stone of Type Ia supernovae," says Kulkarni, who is also the principal investigator on the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF). Led by the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), the PTF is designed to survey the skies for transient flashes of light that last for a few days or months, such as those emitted by exploding stars.

On August 24, the PTF team discovered the supernova in one of the arms of the Pinwheel Galaxy (also called M101), 21 million light years away. They caught the supernova just 11 hours after it exploded.

"Never before have we seen a stellar thermonuclear explosion so soon after it happened," says Lars Bildsten, professor of theoretical astrophysics at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics at UC Santa Barbara, and member of the PTF team, which described its supernova findings in the December 15 issue of the journal Nature.

The PTF team uses an automated system to search for supernovae, and because they were able to point their telescopes at SN2011fe so quickly after its detonation, the astronomers were able to put together a blow-by-blow analysis of the explosion, determining that the supernova involves a dense, Earth-sized object called a white dwarf and, most likely, a main-sequence star (a star in the main stage of its life).

Scientists have long suspected that Type Ia supernovae involve a binary system of two stars in orbit around each other, with one of those stars being a white dwarf. The white dwarf, which is made out of carbon and oxygen, explodes when matter from its companion star spills over onto its surface. But no one is sure what kind of star the companion is. Scientists have suggested that it's another white dwarf, a main-sequence star, a helium star, or a star in a late life stage that's puffed up into a red giant.

Still, because the explosion always involves a white dwarf, its overall brightness and behavior is relatively predictable, making it a useful tool for measuring distances. Since all Type Ia supernovae produce about the same amount of light, those that appear dimmer must be farther away. In this way, by measuring the brightness of supernovae, astronomers can use them as cosmic meter sticks to determine the size of the universeand how fast it's expanding. In fact, the work that earned the 2011 Nobel Prize in physicsthe discovery that the expansion of the universe is speeding up was based on observations using Type Ia supernovae.

"This discovery is exciting because the supernova's infancy and proximity allows us to directly see what the progenitor system is," explains Mansi Kasliwal, an astronomer at the Carnegie Institution for Science who is a recent Caltech doctoral graduate and a coauthor on the paper. "We have expected for a while that a Type Ia supernova involves a carbon-oxygen white dwarf, but now we have direct evidence."

In the case of SN2011fe, the researchers were also able to deduce, by process of elimination, that the companion star is most likely a main-sequence star. How do they know?

If the companion was a red giant, the explosion of the white dwarf would send a shock wave through the red giant, heating it. This scenario would have generated several tens of times more light than the astronomers observed. Additionally, it happens that the Hubble Space Telescope took images of the location where SN2011fe lived before it blew up. When the researchers looked at the data, they found no evidence of red giants or helium stars.

If the companion was another white dwarf, the interactions between the companion and the explosion would produce light in the optical and ultraviolet wavelengths. Since none of this sort of radiation was seen coming from SN2011fe, it is less likely that the companion was a white dwarf.

These resultswhich they describe in a companion paper in the same issue of Naturealong with X-ray and radio observations that also fail to see any evidence for red giants or helium stars, rule those out as the companion. Caltech postdoc Assaf Horesh is the lead author on the paper describing the X-ray and radio data, which will be published in The Astrophysical Journal.

The astronomers have also observed, in unprecedented detail, the material that's blown off during the explosion. In particular, the team detected oxygen hurtling out from the supernova at speeds of over 20,000 kilometers per secondthe first time anyone has seen high-speed oxygen coming from a Type Ia supernova, according to the researchers. "These observations probe the thin, outermost layers of the explosion," Bildsten says. "These are the parts that are moving the fastest, for which we have never been able to see this mix of atomic elements."

Not only was the supernova detected quickly, but the data processingperformed by researchers led by Peter Nugent, staff scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratorywas also done within hours. The machine-learning algorithms developed by Joshua Bloom, an associate professor at UC Berkeley, also helped make the fast find possible. And because the astronomers caught the blast so soon after it ignited, and because it's so close, the researchers say SN2011fe will become one of the best-studied supernovae ever.

"The rapid discovery and classification of SN2011feall on the same nightis a testament to the great teamwork between all the researchers from over a half a dozen institutions," Kulkarni says. "The future looks very bright. Soon we should be finding supernovae at an even younger age and thereby better understand how these explosions happen."

The Astrophysical Journal paper is titled, "Early radio and X-ray observations of the youngest nearby type Ia supernova PTF11kly (SN 2011fe)."
