Local church gets a special delivery, 8 tons of green beans!

Volunteers at East Lake United Methodist Church spent their Saturday afternoon bagging over 16,000 pounds of green beans! The Society of St. Andrew brought the beans to the church and over 20 local feeding agencies will pick them up to distribute in the Birmingham community to feed the hungry. The bagging started around 8 am Saturday morning and the volunteers stayed until the last bean was bagged.

The Society of St. Andrew is a national nonprofit hunger-relief ministry that rescues 25-30 million pounds of fresh, nutritious, excess produce each year that would otherwise go to waste for various marketing reasons. These beans were from a farm in Tennessee and if not for St. Andrew the beans would have gone to waste. This food is then distributed to critical feeding agencies across the country at no cost to the agencies or the hungry people they serve.
