New leak shows Android 4.3 running on Google?s Nexus 4

Android 4.3 Nexus 4

Google was expected to unveil an updated version of its Android platform during the recent Google I/O conference, but the show came and went without any sign of the new OS. With Google?s Sundar Pichai hosting a press event on July 24th, however, rumors of an Android 4.3 debut are once again swirling. Google?s next-generation Nexus 7 tablet leaked on video earlier this week, and reports suggest the slate will be unveiled during Google?s event next week. Since Android 4.3 is expected to be on board, it stands to reason that Google?s Jelly Bean update will be unveiled as well. Further supporting that notion is a leaked Nexus 4 backup file posted by an xda-developers forum member, which seemingly proves there is an Android 4.3 build out there running on Google?s latest smartphone. A screenshot showing Android 4.3 on the Nexus 4 follows below.

B2B PPC Guide: Tips for Business-to-Business PPC Campaigns ...

Quick: What do ground-penetrating radar, hydraulic tie-rod cylinders, and third-party PPC software platforms have in common? Not much, really?but all three are examples of B2B (business-to-business) products that B2B companies can sell via PPC advertising.

PPC is a system that offers B2B companies the ability to capture leads fast and efficiently. Your target market is basically raising its hand and saying it?s interested in your product or service, and it does so by typing in search keywords on Google or Bing. The beauty of it is, they?re looking for you ? instead of you standing around a trade-show booth for ten hours at a time asking people what their biggest business challenges are and hoping their needs match up with what you offer. That?s what makes PPC a form of inbound marketing. If you ask me, PPC is much more appealing than a trade show, dealing with people who are schlepping around bags of swag and smelling like last night?s rager went a bit too long. It can also be far more cost-effective.?

In this guide, we?ll touch on B2B market characteristics and how they relate to PPC, and then we?ll review some real-world PPC tips to help you crush it in your own B2B paid-search campaigns. I?ll refer to my own experiences with ground-penetrating radar, hydraulic cylinders, and software along the way to add some context.

B2B PPC Guide

(Full disclosure: there are, of course, exceptions to some of the examples I use because PPC is not just a science?it?s an art.)

B2B Market Characteristics to Remember for PPC

B2B professionals already know their audience is smaller than the B2C audience. This is because they?re targeting other businesses, not the mass population. As a result, you?ll see keyword search volumes are lower in B2B than in the B2C space.

For example, there are more searches for ?shoes? in a day (shoot, probably in an hour) than there are for ?ground-penetrating radar? in a year. This means that in B2B, you?re targeting a unique subset of the overall population?this is market segmentation within market segmentation, several times over.

B2B PPC Keyword Volume

Your B2B buyer could be one of many people from various departments at a company. It may be the end-user, the CEO, someone from IT, or a company accountant?and you have to design your PPC campaigns (keywords, ad copy, landing pages, etc.) with this in mind.

B2B buyers tend to do a lot of comparison shopping too, especially if we?re talking about expensive purchases, long-term contracts, and possible ongoing relationships. Thus, you need to provide a lot of buyer-oriented information, like case studies and white papers, in your PPC campaigns, as opposed to the ?hot deals? that drive immediate transactions in the B2C world.

Finally, the sales cycle is generally longer in B2B?in fact, it?s often three to six months or more. So your PPC return on investment will often come months down the road. Just tell your boss PPC is an investment in the future?because it is!

PPC Tips for B2B Businesses

At its core, a B2B PPC campaign is just like a B2C one. You have campaigns, ad groups, keywords, and so on, just like B2C?but you?ve got to keep the market characteristics in mind.

1. Research

The previously mentioned examples?ground-penetrating radar and hydraulic tie-rod cylinders?are actual clients I?ve worked with. My reaction when I got the accounts was probably similar to yours: What the what?

For those types of clients, and really any B2B PPC situation, you?ll have to dig in and conduct some serious research to run a top-notch B2B campaign. Why is this? Because even though you might understand your market, applying it to the PPC channel is a different matter, one that?s full of pitfalls.

An example of this is my client in the hydraulic cylinders business. Through the course of my research, I learned there are tie-rod cylinders and there are welded-body cylinders. My client sells only tie-rod cylinders, but when I looked in the account he set up (and had been running for a few months, spending thousands of dollars), I noticed he was getting clicks for welded cylinders, too.

Had I not bothered to do some research, I would have assumed ?a hydraulic cylinder is a hydraulic cylinder? and not caught this wasteful spend. As a result, I made sure to add ?welded? as a negative keyword and called out ?tie-rod cylinders? in the ad copy to avoid the shoppers looking for welded-body cylinders, pre-qualifying clicks and saving the client some dough along the way.

The takeaway is this: Even though you understand your market, be aware that Google and Bing do not, and they?ll try to match you to as many types of keywords as possible. So stay on top of your search query report.

Search Terms Report

Research takes some time, so if you?re looking for a way to outline your strategy, check out an article I wrote last year for more tips on researching a new client.

2. Keywords

Now that you understand the market and who your buyers are (right?), you can address the keywords themselves.

Keyword research and match type strategies are essentially the same for B2B as they are for B2C. One caveat, however, is the preponderance of acronym searches in B2B. The acronym ?GPR,? for example, gets four times the search volume of ?ground penetrating radar.? Whatever your industry, find out what words the customers are using.

On that note, B2B tends to have part and model numbers that sell frequently and get lots of searches. Going back to the tie-rod example, business searchers will use a model number, like ?TX-2500 cylinder,? which comes in handy when bidding on exact-search terms and crafting ads.

You can also tie in the specific application for your B2B product or service when conducting research. Append the target market, like the construction industry or farming, to find valuable long-tail terms like ?GPR for construction? or ?farming hydraulic tie-rods.?

When it comes to bidding and CPCs, they can be all over the board, just as in B2C. Without a doubt, though, there?s more room for ?loose? bidding when you?re talking about high-dollar items and services. In other words, B2B typically has higher profit margins, so last month?s dollar increase in CPC isn?t a big deal.

Because we?re talking B2B, think also from the viewpoint of the company who?s looking for you. Their internal nomenclature includes words like ?vendor? and ?supplier,? so make sure you explore those, along with ?companies,? ?providers,? and ?tools,? in your keyword combinations, e.g., ?PPC software vendors? or ?GPR suppliers.?

As in B2C, negative keywords for B2B will typically include words like ?reviews,? ?jobs,? and ?free.?

3. Campaigns & Ad Groups

Due to the research-heavy nature of B2B, it?s a good idea to put your keywords in campaigns and ad groups that address the various stages of the purchase funnel?and follow the same strategy with landing pages. At the top of the funnel you have research, followed by consideration, then the commitment (purchase) decision at the bottom of the funnel.

B2B Purchase Funnel

Think in terms of the research stage all the way down to the commit stage, and build your campaigns and ad groups around this. So you might have a research campaign/ad groups, consideration campaign/ad groups, and conversion campaign/ad groups.

The benefits of this are invaluable: You?ll know your campaign and/or ad groups with ?vendor? in them are the folks who are at the research phase of the purchase process. Knowing this, in your ad copy it might be best to tout your recent awards or a white paper. Over time, you?ll be able to measure your ROI at the various stages of the purchase funnel and plan your budgets accordingly.

4. Ad Copy

Ad copy presents a major difference in the B2B market when compared to B2C, though best practices are still to be followed. Because of the multiple stakeholders and various stages of purchase, when you craft your ad copy, be cognizant of appropriate calls-to-action (CTA?s) and offers.

add to cartFor example, in the B2B PPC world, you rarely, if ever, would use the CTAs ?buy now? or ?order today??more likely you?ll say ?get more information,? or ?contact us today,? or ?download our free white paper.? The reason behind this is you?re dealing with buyers who need a lot of time (remember that long sales cycle), are just conducting research, and wouldn?t be able to ?buy now? even if they wanted to due to their internal processes and the potentially hefty price of your product or service. In addition, they?ll often want to speak to someone at your company, rather than just clicking at ?Add to Cart? button as in the B2C world.

Are there exceptions to this? You bet there are?it just depends on the product or service.

If you don?t know who your typical buyer is (is it the CEO? the accountant? the marketer?) then write ads targeted to these groups and measure their performance. Use phrases like ?cost-effective,? ?easy to use,? ?easy to integrate,? ?ranked best in class,? and so on to see what resonates with your potential buyer.

Additional ad copy tips:

  • Specificity is key ? for example, you don?t just sell hydraulic cylinders, you sell hydraulic tie-rod cylinders.
  • Use your ad copy to prequalify customers. Mention price points so you can avoid the people who are looking for cheap tools. For example, ?Starting at $500 per month?? will quickly disqualify the people who can?t afford your product or service.
  • Buyers are looking for suppliers for possible long-term relationships. You need to make sure your copy speaks to the buyer?s pain points in a clear, compelling way. You feel their pain, you have the solution, and you can walk them through all phases of the purchase funnel.
  • Use social proof ? show off your Google plus-ones in your sitelinks. If you don?t have that set up, get started on it.
  • Use credibility examples whenever you have them ? phrases like ?top-rated,? ?award-winning,? and ?voted best-in-class.?
  • Show prospects how easy it is to do business with your company. Do this in your ads by calling out GSA (government) pricing if you offer it, the fact you accept POs (purchase orders) if you do, or that you offer financing terms, if that?s the case.
  • Be the trusted source for information ? use your sitelinks to share white papers, e-books, case studies, downloadable forms, financing calculators, and anything else someone might need in the research phase.

5. Measurement

With the longer sales cycle, it?s imperative that you track your site?s visitors closely with Google Analytics or another analytics software package.

Over that three- to six-month sales cycle, your prospects might come back repeatedly to get more information?so hopefully you?re adding more information to your site regularly. Or, you can try remarketing to make sure you?re regularly stalking, err, I mean, are in front of your prospects on a consistent basis.

What this really means is today?s click costs may not actually be conversions for 180 days or more?so hang on for the long haul.

Conclusion

By now you realize the B2B PPC world requires a long view, especially when compared to the wham-bam world of B2C PPC. It is, however, a highly effective way to get your B2B organization in front of new prospects?and without pulling trade-show duty.

July 16, 2013 - 2:08 pm ET -- UPDATED: 7/16/13 4:22 pm ET - adds closing price

DETROIT (Reuters) -- The shares of electric carmaker Tesla Motors Inc. fell 14 percent today after Goldman Sachs Group Inc. set a new price target far below the current trading price.

Goldman Sachs analyst Patrick Archambault, in a broader research note on the automotive sector published earlier today, offered three different growth scenarios for Tesla and set a six-month price target of $84 a share, up from $61, previously. He left unchanged his "neutral" rating on the stock.

Tesla's shares plunged 14.3 percent, or $18.21, to close at $109.05 on Nasdaq. Through Monday, the stock had nearly quadrupled so far this year. Earlier this month, Nasdaq said that Tesla's shares would be listed on the Nasdaq 100 index to reflect the company's rising profile.

If the stock closes at this level, it would be the largest one-day drop since Jan 13, 2012, when it fell nearly 20 percent.

In one case, Archambault sees CEO Elon Musk's company selling 105,000 cars, including the Model S and a future smaller sedan, with 14.6 percent operating margins and earnings of $5.99 a share. In the second scenario, he sees 150,000 sales, 14.8 percent margins and earnings per share of $8.59. The most bullish scenario was for 200,000 sales, 15.2 percent margins and $11.69 in earnings per share.

In averaging out the three scenarios, Archambault came up with the new price target of $84, which is far below the current price.

Speaking more broadly about the auto sector, Archambault said auto stocks have underperformed the S&P 500 index by an average of 26 percent in three of the last four tightening economic periods. He said the sector has historically peaked 65 percent of the way through an expansion.

Archambault said he was now focused on General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co. "Both ... have strong product driven growth stories in multiple regions," he said in the note.

Archambault rates both stock as "buy," but sees stronger near-term catalysts for GM's share, including the rollout of profitable full-size pickup trucks boosting margins in the second half of 2013, and the possibility of a common dividend by year end.

HTC One Max vs. Samsung Galaxy Note 3: Which Upcoming ?Phablet? Should You Buy? [REPORT]

Credit: HTC

Credit: HTC

HTC One Max and the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 are two high-end "phablets" coming in Q3 of 2013. The HTC One Max release date is expected to be early September while the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 release date is expected in the same time frame, between July and September. The September release date for the HTC One Max clearly is targeted against the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 that is expected at the IFA 2013 trade show in Berlin, between September 6 and September 11.

Follow Us

HTC knows that it will have to release slightly earlier than Samsung in order to steal market share from them. At least HTC is learning from the mistakes it made with earlier flagships. These two are not the only high-end upcoming phablets, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra and LG Optimus G2 are also expected to fill the phablet niche. When the two devices are released the question on the minds of most consumers will be which one to buy in a market that will become quickly saturated with phablets.

HTC One Max specs leaks are fairly different and information about the device is less known compared to the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. The HTC One Max is thought to have a 6-inch display and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 CPU, the best processor released to date. The Verge reports more HTC One Max specs. "A 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 chip is expected to lie at the heart of the One Max, allied to 2GB of RAM, up to 64GB of storage, and a 3200mAh battery." The HTC One Max specs leak and pictures come from a Mobile Geeks, [translated from German using Google translate],

The 6-inch 1080p Super LCD display on the HTC One Max is about the same size as the 5.9-inch display expected on the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. Earlier we had heard rumors about a 6.3-inch display, but perhaps HTC has decided to tone it down. The HTC One Max would also be the first HTC device since 2011 to come with a stylus, allowing it to compete directly with Samsung Galaxy Note 3 S-pen when it comes to handwriting and note-taking functions.?

The following Samsung Galaxy Note 3 specs have been confirmed: "The Note III will also reportedly include a 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 processor from Qualcomm, LTE, 802.11ac W-Fi and a 5.99-inch 1080p display running Android 4.2.2/4.3."?quoting inside sources at Sam Mobile as claiming the Note III will be "the most powerful in the world?with a octa-core processor, eight-core GPU, 3GB of RAM, 5.99-inch Full HD display and a 13MP rear camera."

Credit: Samsung

Credit: Samsung

With regard to the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 display leaks:

Judging on all the rumors to date the?Galaxy Note 3?is expected to come boasting a 5.99-inch resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels full HD display, the screen will apparently be different dependant on the country it is released in, and one model could see a Super AMOLED display and another with a Super LCD display. We are not too sure on this because at the end of the day these are all just speculations judged on leaks.

One other thing worth nothing about the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 specs is the RAM and storage options, "The smartphone could also come with 16GB, 32GB or 64GB storage versions, 3GB of RAM and a possible 128GB storage option." It looks like Samsung is trying to hit many different price points for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, the same way they did with the Samsung Galaxy S4 variants. Multiple Samsung Galaxy Note 3 variants could give Samsung an advantage in the phablet market.

Credit: Samsung

Credit: Samsung

In a previous article we had confirmed at least four possible models:

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 High-End Limited Edition Model

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 specs for the high-end limited edition model will include a 13-MP camera, unbreakable AMOLED display and 3GB RAM. This version is likely to be all-metal.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Standard Variant

This version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will feature a plastic body rather than the metal that Samsung has moved toward. It will have a 13-MP camera and a regular AMOLED display.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Lower Variant

Similarly this model of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will also be plastic and have a 13-MP camera and LCD display. ?

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Low End Version

The cheapest model of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will have a plastic body, 8-MP camera and LCD display.

Credit: HTC

Credit: HTC

It is currently unknown whether HTC intends to do the same thing with the HTC One Max though it seems unlikely. With the HTC One Mini already on the way and intended to hit the low price point, the HTC One Max looks like it will be the flagship HTC phablet. Aside from that HTC has the rumored HTC One "M8" next-gen upgrade in the works. The HTC "M8" next-gen device is expected in 2014, well after the release of the HTC One Mini and HTC One Max.

Finally, with regard to Android OS, both the HTC One Max and Samsung Galaxy Note 3 are expected to run Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. A Samsung Galaxy Note 3 leak from SamMobile showed that the vendor model number and appeared to show Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean as the OS. Given that Android 4.3 Jelly Bean has been expected for late July, it is somewhat disappointing that Android 4.2.2 is appearing to remain the dominant OS.

It seems that neither the HTC One Max nor the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will get the anticipated Android 4.3 Jelly Bean OS upgrade. It is possible that Google is withholding the update so that it could make the Motorola X the first device to have Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and then follow it up with Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie for the Nexus 5.

Ultimately, with specs so similar between the HTC One Max and Samsung Galaxy Note 3, the two devices will be differentiated by release date and price. The HTC One Max could steal the Samsung Galaxy Note 3's thunder if it has an earlier release date or a cheaper price. However, with numerous variants hitting multiple price points from high-range to low-range, Samsung could easily dominate the phablet market.

It will be interesting to see how the competition over phablets between HTC and Samsung plays out. Hopefully as the HTC One Max release date and Samsung Galaxy Note 3 release date draw near we will have more specs leaks and price leaks that will give us a better idea of what to expect from each device.

Based off the known specs, release date which device are you leaning towards? The HTC One Max or Samsung Galaxy Note 3?

Shea's late goal lifts US past Costa Rica, 1-0

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) ? Brek Shea scored his first international goal off a feed from Landon Donovan in the 82nd minute Tuesday night to give the United States a 1-0 victory over Costa Rica and the top spot in its Gold Cup group.

Seconds after Sean Johnson made a brilliant save off a corner kick, Joe Corona cleared the ball, setting up the winning sequence. The veteran Donovan, trying to work his way back into a starring role on the national team after a self-imposed hiatus, took the ball on the right side. He quickly spotted Shea, who came on just five minutes earlier, streaking down the middle.

Donovan's pass hit Shea in stride, and the Stoke City player sent a left-footed shot from 15 yards off goalkeeper Patrick Pemberton for the winner, the Americans' eighth straight, a team record.

They will play El Salvador on Sunday in Baltimore, while Costa Rica meets Honduras.

Shea's goal broke a 785-minute string without being scored upon for Costa Rica. It followed Johnson, considered a fourth-stringer at best in the net for the United States, making a clutch stop on Carlos Johnson.

The match was played in slightly different conditions than the last time the nations met. That was in a blizzard in Denver, with the United States edging Costa Rica 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier. Tuesday night, there was plenty of moisture on the pitch just before kickoff, but it came from sprinklers trying to keep the turf in shape during a northeastern heat wave.

With both sides already having clinched moving on in the CONCACAF championship, not much happened offensively until late in the match in front of 25,432.

Early in the second half, Costa Rica captain Pemberton came out of his net, collided with a teammate outside the area and then had the ball hit him squarely in the hands. He was given only a yellow card, however, then immediately made saves on Jose Torres' curling free kick and Donovan's shot off a rebound.

That sequence opened up play for a while, but then it deteriorated into sloppiness and some roughness in midfield between teams with no love lost.

U.S. captain DaMarcus Beasley took a nasty spill and was run over by Rodney Wallace early in the match. A woozy Beasley sat out three minutes before returning ? and almost immediately stripped the ball from Wallace.

His teammates struggled to link up, showing their lack of familiarity with each other, through the first 20 minutes. U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann's charge to is to find the right combinations to get the Americans into the World Cup ? they lead CONCACAF qualifying through six games with 13 points, while Costa Rica is next with 11 ? and then perform well in Brazil. He's using the Gold Cup to test as many players as possible, while giving most of the national team regulars who have done so well in qualifying a breather.

Neither goalkeeper was particularly threatened until U.S. defender Clarence Goodson got free on the left side of the box late in the first half. His left-footed drive was deflected out of bounds by the defense.

Minnesota Wolf Population Falls; Lower Quota Planned
(The Associated Press via Faribault County Register)
Wildlife officials announced that Minnesota?s midwinter wolf population has fallen by about 710 animals over the past five years to around 2,211. They attribute the decline to fewer deer for wolves to prey upon and the resumption of sport hunting and trapping of wolves last fall. Officials in the Department of Natural Resources stressed that wolves are resilient and that the decline is no reason to fear for the survival of wolves in Minnesota. More

Bobcats Face Deadly Diseases, Weakened Immune Systems from Exposure to Household Rat Poison
(San Gabriel Valley Tribune)
Caught between the green lawns and the brown hills of Southern California is the North American bobcat, Lynx rufus. While not technically endangered, scientists as recently as June have watched healthy bobcats die of severe mange, a common skin disease caused by parasitic mites normally afflicting canines. Local scientists believe the tuft-eared wildcats are being poisoned by eating gophers or ground squirrels that have ingested rat poison left in yards by homeowners or near dams and other government structures. Potential Hot Spot for Avian Flu Transmission Identified in Western Alaska
(U.S. Geological Survey)
Low-pathogenic avian influenza viruses with Eurasian genes have been found among birds in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta of western Alaska, supporting the theory that the area is a potential point of entry for foreign animal diseases such as the more highly pathogenic H5N1 strain, according to a new study by U.S. Geological Survey scientists. The Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta is an important breeding ground for many bird species and is located where multiple migratory flyways converge, providing opportunities for avian pathogens to spread. More

Nissan to unveil Datsun in India in cheap-car push

By Norihiko Shirouzu and Aradhana Aravindan

BEIJING/MUMBAI (Reuters) - Nissan Motor Co takes the veil off the first car in its resurrected Datsun brand in New Delhi on Monday - a sub-400,000-rupee ($6,700) hatchback that is part of a foray by the Japanese auto maker into cheap cars for emerging markets.

With the Datsun hatchback and other Datsun models to follow over the next three years - one of which could be priced as low as $4,000 (240,000 rupees) if Nissan can meet its aggressive manufacturing cost objectives - Nissan is treading ever so closer to the ultra-low-cost car market.

That market in India is now famously occupied by the Tata Nano, a barebones car that retails for between 150,000 and 220,000 rupees.

"We try to keep the price positioning for Datsun competitive, so that products are appealing" to the lower half of the auto market in India where Nissan has few products competing today, Nissan's program director for Datsun, Ashwani Gupta, told Reuters in an interview.

It is a move that has been generally resisted so far by other global auto giants, such as Toyota Motor Corp., out of concern a scruffy, ultra-cheap car model could tarnish their high-value brands.

Top Toyota executives, including current chairman Takeshi Uchiyamada, rejected a chief engineer's design for a low-cost emerging market car several years ago, saying it was too cheap to be called a Toyota, an engineering executive said.

The car has since undergone some design iterations and was finally launched in India in 2010 as the Toyota Etios sedan, which starts at 545,000 rupees. A hatchback version of the car, launched in 2011, starts at about 450,000 rupees.

Since Nissan plans to market Datsun cars in India through its existing Nissan-branded dealerships, Datsun could expose the Japanese auto maker to similar risks, though executives downplay the possibility.

They say use of a separate brand name should effectively shield Nissan's brand image. Datsun, which Nissan once used for its cars outside Japan, has a history dating back to the 1930s.

"We're serving different customers" with Datsun, said Tatjana Natarova, a Datsun spokeswoman. "That's why we came up with a different brand."

To make Datsun cars affordable, Nissan has been aiming to reduce manufacturing costs to $3,000 to $5,000 per vehicle. The first car is due for a launch in India early next year and Gupta said the company has partially achieved the cost goals.

Still, as price-competitive as that may be, it will face formidable competition from Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motor Co , which together control two-thirds of India's passenger car market, excluding SUVs and vans.

Maruti has about 1,200 retail stores in India, while Hyundai operates a network of more than 350 stores. Nissan, by contrast, has only about 100 dealers, though it says it plans to triple the number of its stores to 300 by March 2017.

Nissan said last year it would revive the Datsun name as a marquee for emerging markets, starting with India, Russia and Indonesia. Eventually, it wants to expand into Southeast Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa.

To make the new name stick, Nissan does not plan to stop with a sub-400,000-rupee car. It plans to expand the Datsun brand's appeal by following its first car with a second model by the end of next year and a third vehicle by 2016.

Nissan is still trying to meet the goal of producing a Datsun car for as little as $3,000 per vehicle, said an executive speaking on condition of anonymity.

"If we met that, there would be a good possibility we could offer the car for $4,000 on the retail market," the executive said.

That is not as cheap as the Nano, but Nissan is not aiming to compete head-on with the Nano any way, the executive said.

By the year ending March 2017, Nissan wants to capture 10 percent of India's overall passenger vehicle market that includes sedans, sport-utility vehicles and vans. Nissan had a market share of less than 1 percent as of May, data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers shows.

By then, Datsun aims to generate one third to a half of overall sales in India, which bought 2.7 million passenger vehicles in the year ended March 2013, Gupta said.

To achieve low manufacturing costs, the Datsun product team designed and engineered cars so that "nearly all" the components needed to build them could be procured within India, Gupta said.

India has a relatively limited auto parts supply base so procuring almost all the necessary components locally poses a challenge. Gupta said though that Nissan aims to pull off the feat not only in India, but in Indonesia and Russia as well.

Gupta said Datsun cars would be stripped of features and functions that do not offer "value" to customers in markets they target to make cars affordable.

Nissan thus will likely avoid developing new technology. Instead, it will use tried technology, in particular vehicle underpinnings, engines and transmissions, which are costly to develop. It is also likely to pare down expensive features such as power-windows, navigation systems, and extra safety airbags.

Microsoft drops base Surface RT price to $349

The Surface RT tablet, which was announced last year, met with lukewarm response from customers and reviewers alike. Burdened with a fairly outdated processor and an OS with few apps, not to mention priced the same as the iPad which has neither of those issues, the Surface RT was never going to set the sales charts on fire.

Microsoft seems to have realized their mistake and intend to solve at least one of those problems, by dropping the price by a cool $150 across the board. The base 32GB Surface RT now costs $349.99 whereas the 64GB model costs $449.99. If you want to get the Touch Keyboard, you?ll have to add $100 to these prices.

The price reduction will come into effect this Sunday, July 14, 2013. The price drop does make the Surface RT a bit more attractive but with a less than stellar user experience and not enough apps to download, it would be better if you spend a bit more and get the Surface, assuming you must have a Surface. There?s always the iPad otherwise.

Pebble says a million apps have been downloaded, updates status of outstanding Kickstarter orders

Pebble one million apps downloaded so far, all Kickstarter orders to be shipped by weeks end

To say that Pebble's Kickstarter-launched smartwatch has been more popular than it expected would be a slight understatement. In fact, the company touched base with us today to let us know exactly how much demand there's been for the wearable, how it's going to fulfill that demand and what it's doing to help developers. For a small startup, Pebble's taken a huge amount of orders for its $150 device. Along with the initial 85,000 Kickstarter pledges, the company told us today that it's had over 190,000 pre-orders to date. On top of that, over a million Pebble "watchapps" have been downloaded from Pebble and its developers. Naturally, all that success has created some issues -- to see what the company's planning on doing about it, head after the break.

South Africa's Jobodwana sizzles to sprint double at World University Games

No less than 10 gold medals were decided on day four of the World University Games with the hosts Russia taking half of them in Kazan on Wednesday (10).

However, the plaudits for the best performance went to South African sprinter Anaso Jobodwana who added to his 100m title when he sped to the 200m crown in 20.00.

The 20-year-old student at Jackson State University in the USA will be mildly frustrated by the fact that the wind reading was 2.4 metres-per-second, but even though the breeze was too strong for record purposes, it didn?t invalidate what a fine run it was.

Jamaica?s Rasheed Dwyer and Japan?s Shota Iizuka were second and third in 20.23 and 20.33 respectively.?

The first final of the afternoon was the women?s Hammer and the USA?s American collegiate (NCAA) champion, Jeneva McCall, clinched her global title with her third-round effort of 73.75m.

Russia?s 2013 world leader Oksana Kondratyeva had to be satisfied with silver with 72.22m while Moldova?s 2011 World University Games champion Zalina Marghieva was unable to defend her title and finished third with 71.10m.

In the morning, Russian athletes achieved a clean sweep in the women?s 20km Race Walk.

The four Russians were packed together right from the start onwards and never let the other competitors come near.

After the disqualification of former World record-holder Vera Sokolova, Anisya Kirdyapkina took the gold medal in a World University Games record of 1:29:30, Irina Yumanova passed the line second in 1:30:41, with Lina Bikulova a distant third in 1:32:30.

Russia easily were the winners of the team title.

Russia?s Dmitry Tarabin put all his energy into the first attempt and his 83.11m was enough for the gold and make it a husband-and-wife double after his spouse Mariya Abakumova won the women?s title on Tuesday.

A surprising winner in the men?s 400m Hurdles was Slovakia?s Martin Kucera. With a fifth place in Tuesday?s semifinal, he only just scraped into the final. Coming into the home straight, and running in lane one, he was near the back of the field but in the last 100 metres he overtook the complete field before finishing in a personal best of 49.79.

Finland?s Hanna-Maari Latvala, who entered the competition with a season?s best time of 23.62, had the best start of the field in the 200m final and kept her lead until 40 metres before the end, when she was overtaken by Kimberly Hyacinthe.

The Canadian took the gold in a personal best of 22.78 while Latvala broke the 23-second barrier for the first time by clocking 22.98 for the silver medal.

USA?s Vashti Thomas won the 100m Hurdles in a super-quick 12.61. She had by far the best start and kept her advantage the whole race. She broke the World University Games record of Poland?s Lucyna Langer, set in 1979 at altitude in Mexico City, by 0.01.

Belarus? Alina Talay was second with 12.78.

Russia?s two-time World University Games champion Alexandra Kiryashova could go no higher than 4.20m in the Pole Vault, which placed her seventh and opened the door for her compatriot Anastasia Savchenko to take her title.

Savchenko cleared all her attempts up to and including 4.60m on her first attempt before three failures at a World University Games record-equalling height of 4.70m.

The last event of the day was the women?s 3000m Steeplechase and Russia?s Olympic and World champion Yulia Zaripova typically went into the lead straight from the gun.

She won in a European-leading time of 9:28.00 and finished more than 12 seconds ahead of her nearest rival.

Russia? 2011 World champion Tatyana Chernova is the overnight leader in the Heptathlon with 3861 points, only 66 points shy of her day-one total when she took the world gold in Daegu, and 167 points ahead of Czech Republic?s Eliska Klucinova.

Latvia?s Laura Ikauniece is just 24 points behind Klucinova and the gap between places two and five is only 80 points so, barring Chernova having a disaster, an interesting battle for silver and bronze can be expected.

Many birds feeds on mosquitoes that spread the West Nile virus, a disease that killed 286 people in the United States in 2012 according to the Centers for Disease Control. Birds also eat insects that can be agricultural pests. However, rising temperatures threaten wild birds, including the Missouri-native Acadian flycatcher, by making snakes more active, according to University of Missouri biologist John Faaborg. He noted that farmers, public health officials and wildlife managers should be aware of complex indirect effects of climate change in addition to the more obvious influences of higher temperatures and irregular weather patterns.

"A warmer climate may be causing snakes to become more active and seek more baby birds for food," said Faaborg, professor of biological sciences in MU's College of Arts and Science. "Although our study used 20 years of data from Missouri, similar threats to bird populations may occur around the world. Increased snake predation on birds is an example of an indirect consequence that forecasts of the effects of climate change often do not take into account."

In the heart of Missouri's Ozark forest, cooler temperatures usually make snakes less active than in the edge of the forest or in smaller pockets of woodland. However, during abnormally hot years, even the interior of the forest increases in temperature. Since snakes are cold-blooded, warmer temperatures make the reptiles more active and increase their need for food. Previous studies using video cameras found that snakes are major predators of young birds.

Over the past twenty years, fewer young Acadian flycatchers (Empidonax virescens) survived during hotter years, according to research by Faaborg and his colleagues published in the journal Global Change Biology. Survival of young indigo buntings (Passerina cyanea) also decreased during warmer years. Faaborg suggested that a likely reason for decreased baby bird survival in hot years was an increase in snake activity. Faaborg, his colleagues and his former students, collected the data used in the study during two decades of fieldwork.

"Low survival in the Ozark nests harms bird numbers in other areas," Faaborg said. "Birds hatched in the Ozark forest spread out to colonize the rest of the state and surrounding region. Small fragments of forests in the rest of the state do not support successful bird reproduction, so bird populations in the entire state depend on the Ozarks."

LAC-MEGANTIC, Quebec (AP) ? Following is a timeline of events leading up to the fiery weekend explosion of a runaway oil train that smashed into this small lakeside Canadian town, killing at least 15 people, leaving dozens missing and incinerating much of its downtown.

? Friday, July 5 ? 11:25 p.m. EDT

The train, carrying some 100,000 liters of crude oil, is parked in the village of Nantes, about six miles (10 kilometers) from Lac-Megantic, by the train engineer, who had just finished his shift. The engineer departs, leaving the train unattended.

? 11:30 p.m. EDT

A resident in Nantes calls 911 to report a fire in the parked train.

? Midnight

Firefighters and an employee of the train operator, Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway, arrive on the scene. Firefighters douse the blaze and the train engine is shut down. Canada's Transportation Safety Board at a news conference on Tuesday did not say who shut down the engine or who was last inside the train, key points because the train operator says the shutdown may have led to the release of the train's air brakes. On Wednesday, the railway company chief says an employee failed to properly set the train brakes.

? Saturday, July 6 - 12:56 a.m. EDT

After firefighters depart, the train starts to move. It begins rolling down a slope away from Nantes and toward Lac-Megantic. The train picks up considerable speed.

? 1:15 a.m. EDT

The first explosion is reported as the train derails in Lac-Megantic. The locomotive detaches and continues through town for about a kilometer. Residents report a series of explosions, with fireballs shooting into the sky over the next several hours and a wall of flames that destroys the downtown, including a bar filled with patrons, the library, and a waterside park, along with dozens of other buildings.

Health Concerns: Lack of Sleep and Too Much of a Good Thing

Editor's note: Americans may be living longer and even exercising a tad more, but they're not necessarily healthier, a study released Wednesday shows. Myriad reasons exist: too much bad food, too little good food, a sedentary lifestyle, smoking, drinking and just plain living in the wrong area of the country. Yahoo asked readers: What is your biggest obstacle in the way of a healthier you? Here's one response.

Tell us in the comments about your biggest health hurdle.

FIRST PERSON | It's always worst when my husband is deployed. I see the evidence etched into my face in wrinkles, thickening my waistline, and evidenced by the wicked bathroom scale as it inches ever upward away from what I consider a good healthy weight to, well, what it is now.

When my husband's deployed, I get way too little sleep. I don't have much of a choice. There's no one else around to help out, and once you lose a good sleep pattern, it's very hard to find it again (if anyone sees mine running loose in the neighborhood, please call immediately...).

Here's the rotten pattern the way it most recently played out:

Husband deploys in January. Kim immediately launches into a flurry of activity to keep herself mentally and physically occupied. This includes doing things like playing Words With Friends until she passes out from exhaustion or reading way beyond that. She reads in bed, so this helps.

By February, she's all funned out.

She makes a fresh pot of coffee at daybreak -- that's 10 cups of high-octane awake by most folks' standards, but just barely makes our intrepid mom lucid. Should she have a headache nor not sleep well the night before, she heads to Starbucks where she gets the sweetest, largest, most bad-for-her pick-me-up on the menu (venti white mocha, and sometimes with whipped cream, because, as she tells the barrista, "You only live once, honey"). Six bazillion calories later, she's functioning on a normal level, able to do things like speak coherently and drive a car. By dinner, she's crashing, but Kim cannot afford to do this, because she has three kids and a whole night of homework, baths, jammies and bedtime stories to deal with, plus the laundry that didn't get folded when she crashed last night at 2 a.m.

Do you see a pattern? If not, let me illuminate: I wake up the next morning with a raging headache (again) and the cycle repeats.

Four months later, her husband comes home from Afghanistan and his wife is 15 pounds heavier and has nothing even remotely resembling a normal sleeping pattern.

Break out the beans... again.
