HTC One Max and the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 are two high-end "phablets" coming in Q3 of 2013. The HTC One Max release date is expected to be early September while the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 release date is expected in the same time frame, between July and September. The September release date for the HTC One Max clearly is targeted against the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 that is expected at the IFA 2013 trade show in Berlin, between September 6 and September 11.

HTC knows that it will have to release slightly earlier than Samsung in order to steal market share from them. At least HTC is learning from the mistakes it made with earlier flagships. These two are not the only high-end upcoming phablets, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra and LG Optimus G2 are also expected to fill the phablet niche. When the two devices are released the question on the minds of most consumers will be which one to buy in a market that will become quickly saturated with phablets.

HTC One Max specs leaks are fairly different and information about the device is less known compared to the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. The HTC One Max is thought to have a 6-inch display and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 CPU, the best processor released to date. The Verge reports more HTC One Max specs. "A 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 chip is expected to lie at the heart of the One Max, allied to 2GB of RAM, up to 64GB of storage, and a 3200mAh battery." The HTC One Max specs leak and pictures come from a Mobile Geeks, [translated from German using Google translate],

The 6-inch 1080p Super LCD display on the HTC One Max is about the same size as the 5.9-inch display expected on the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. Earlier we had heard rumors about a 6.3-inch display, but perhaps HTC has decided to tone it down. The HTC One Max would also be the first HTC device since 2011 to come with a stylus, allowing it to compete directly with Samsung Galaxy Note 3 S-pen when it comes to handwriting and note-taking functions.?

The following Samsung Galaxy Note 3 specs have been confirmed: "The Note III will also reportedly include a 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 processor from Qualcomm, LTE, 802.11ac W-Fi and a 5.99-inch 1080p display running Android 4.2.2/4.3."?quoting inside sources at Sam Mobile as claiming the Note III will be "the most powerful in the world?with a octa-core processor, eight-core GPU, 3GB of RAM, 5.99-inch Full HD display and a 13MP rear camera."

With regard to the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 display leaks:

Judging on all the rumors to date the?Galaxy Note 3?is expected to come boasting a 5.99-inch resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels full HD display, the screen will apparently be different dependant on the country it is released in, and one model could see a Super AMOLED display and another with a Super LCD display. We are not too sure on this because at the end of the day these are all just speculations judged on leaks.

One other thing worth nothing about the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 specs is the RAM and storage options, "The smartphone could also come with 16GB, 32GB or 64GB storage versions, 3GB of RAM and a possible 128GB storage option." It looks like Samsung is trying to hit many different price points for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, the same way they did with the Samsung Galaxy S4 variants. Multiple Samsung Galaxy Note 3 variants could give Samsung an advantage in the phablet market.

In a previous article we had confirmed at least four possible models:

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 High-End Limited Edition Model

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 specs for the high-end limited edition model will include a 13-MP camera, unbreakable AMOLED display and 3GB RAM. This version is likely to be all-metal.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Standard Variant

This version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will feature a plastic body rather than the metal that Samsung has moved toward. It will have a 13-MP camera and a regular AMOLED display.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Lower Variant

Similarly this model of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will also be plastic and have a 13-MP camera and LCD display. ?

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Low End Version

The cheapest model of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will have a plastic body, 8-MP camera and LCD display.

It is currently unknown whether HTC intends to do the same thing with the HTC One Max though it seems unlikely. With the HTC One Mini already on the way and intended to hit the low price point, the HTC One Max looks like it will be the flagship HTC phablet. Aside from that HTC has the rumored HTC One "M8" next-gen upgrade in the works. The HTC "M8" next-gen device is expected in 2014, well after the release of the HTC One Mini and HTC One Max.

Finally, with regard to Android OS, both the HTC One Max and Samsung Galaxy Note 3 are expected to run Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. A Samsung Galaxy Note 3 leak from SamMobile showed that the vendor model number and appeared to show Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean as the OS. Given that Android 4.3 Jelly Bean has been expected for late July, it is somewhat disappointing that Android 4.2.2 is appearing to remain the dominant OS.

It seems that neither the HTC One Max nor the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will get the anticipated Android 4.3 Jelly Bean OS upgrade. It is possible that Google is withholding the update so that it could make the Motorola X the first device to have Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and then follow it up with Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie for the Nexus 5.

Ultimately, with specs so similar between the HTC One Max and Samsung Galaxy Note 3, the two devices will be differentiated by release date and price. The HTC One Max could steal the Samsung Galaxy Note 3's thunder if it has an earlier release date or a cheaper price. However, with numerous variants hitting multiple price points from high-range to low-range, Samsung could easily dominate the phablet market.

It will be interesting to see how the competition over phablets between HTC and Samsung plays out. Hopefully as the HTC One Max release date and Samsung Galaxy Note 3 release date draw near we will have more specs leaks and price leaks that will give us a better idea of what to expect from each device.
