200-ft. Swastika etched into Grass Valley golf course

GRASS VALLEY, CA - A 200-square-foot swastika was discovered etched into the tee box at Alta Sierra Country Club over the New Year's weekend, according to manager John Renslow.

A report on the Union.com website?detailed the symbol was etched into the grass with some kind of grass-killing product. Renslow said the marking was big enough to be seen by passing motorist on Norlene Way.

Renslow said the golf course is victim to occasional acts of vandalism, which officials have determined this most recent damage, rather than "gang-related activity".

Officer Jim Amaral of the Grass Valley Police Department concurred, "I wouldn't say the swastikas are gang-related,"Amaral said. "It's just kids think it's cool to do something offensive. They don't necessarily believe in the ideology that's behind it."

Amaral went on to say some local teenagers were caught spray painting swastikas on Grass Valley buildings in the fall.

While the swastika symbol dates back to ancient cultures, it is most synonymous with Adolf Hitler's Nazi movement of World War II. Many skinhead gangs have adopted the symbol and use it as a marker of their beliefs.

According to the Union, country club employees have since removed the symbol and resodded that part of the tee box.
