NFL Rumors: Have St. Louis Rams Finally Hired A Defensive Coordinator?

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

Well that didn?t take long, but it did take longer than the five minutes he predicted when he was fired by the Dallas Cowboys. Brian Costello of the New York Post reports the St. Louis Rams are close to hiring Rob Ryan as their defensive coordinator, just three days after being fired by the Cowboys.

If Ryan gets hired by the Rams, he will fill the position meant for Gregg Williams last year. However, the ?Bountygate? scandal led to a suspension for Williams and the Rams still haven?t filled the position. The connection between Ryan and Rams head coach Jeff Fisher goes back a long way;?Rob?s father Buddy Ryan, coached Fisher as a player for the Chicago Bears. Fisher also coached under Buddy in the Philadelphia Eagles organization.

Ironically the Rams would take a step back statistically by hiring Ryan. The Cowboys finished the season 19th in the league in defense, while the Rams finished 14th. The Rams tied for?the NFL lead in sacks with 52, which is 18 more than the Cowboys tallied and St. Louis was also able to pick off 17 passes last year, 10 more than the Dallas defense.

It?s always interesting to watch the coaching carousel?in the NFL when teams get eliminated and this seems like a good match. It?s pretty ironic that on the same day the Cowboys hire a new defensive coordinator, Rob Ryan also finds work. To make things even juicier, the Rams and Cowboys are slated to play each other in Dallas during the 2013 season.

Just like that, we have already have a storyline for next season.
