Even brown dwarfs may grow rocky planets: Sizing up grains of cosmic dust around failed star

ScienceDaily (Nov. 30, 2012) ? Astronomers using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) have for the first time found that the outer region of a dusty disc encircling a brown dwarf contains millimetre-sized solid grains like those found in denser discs around newborn stars. The surprising finding challenges theories of how rocky, Earth-scale planets form, and suggests that rocky planets may be even more common in the Universe than expected.

Rocky planets are thought to form through the random collision and sticking together of what are initially microscopic particles in the disc of material around a star. These tiny grains, known as cosmic dust, are similar to very fine soot or sand. However, in the outer regions around a brown dwarf -- a star-like object, but one too small to shine brightly like a star -- astronomers expected that grains could not grow because the discs were too sparse, and particles would be moving too fast to stick together after colliding. Also, prevailing theories say that any grains that manage to form should move quickly towards the central brown dwarf, disappearing from the outer parts of the disc where they could be detected.

"We were completely surprised to find millimetre-sized grains in this thin little disc," said Luca Ricci of the California Institute of Technology, USA, who led a team of astronomers based in the United States, Europe and Chile. "Solid grains of that size shouldn't be able to form in the cold outer regions of a disc around a brown dwarf, but it appears that they do. We can't be sure if a whole rocky planet could develop there, or already has, but we're seeing the first steps, so we're going to have to change our assumptions about conditions required for solids to grow," he said.

ALMA's increased resolution compared to previous telescopes also allowed the team to pinpoint carbon monoxide gas around the brown dwarf -- the first time that cold molecular gas has been detected in such a disc. This discovery, and that of the millimetre-size grains, suggest that the disc is much more similar to the ones around young stars than previously expected.

Ricci and his colleagues made their finding using the partially completed ALMA telescope in the high-altitude Chilean desert. ALMA is a growing collection of high precision, dish-shaped antennas that work together as one large telescope to observe the Universe with groundbreaking detail and sensitivity. ALMA "sees" the Universe in millimetre-wavelength light, which is invisible to human eyes. Construction of ALMA is scheduled to finish in 2013, but astronomers began observing with a partial array of ALMA dishes in 2011.

The astronomers pointed ALMA at the young brown dwarf ISO-Oph 102, also known as Rho-Oph 102, in the Rho Ophiuchi star-forming region in the constellation of Ophiuchus (The Serpent Bearer). With about 60 times the mass of Jupiter but only 0.06 times that of the Sun, the brown dwarf has too little mass to ignite the thermonuclear reactions by which ordinary stars shine. However, it emits heat released by its slow gravitational contraction and shines with a reddish colour, albeit much less brightly than a star.

ALMA collected light with wavelengths around a millimetre, emitted by disc material warmed by the brown dwarf. The grains in the disc do not emit much radiation at wavelengths longer than their own size, so a characteristic drop-off in the brightness can be measured at longer wavelengths. ALMA is an ideal instrument for measuring this drop-off and thus for sizing up the grains. The astronomers compared the brightness of the disc at wavelengths of 0.89 mm and 3.2 mm. The drop-off in brightness from 0.89 mm to 3.2 mm was not as steep as expected, showing that at least some of the grains are a millimetre or more in size.

"ALMA is a powerful new tool for solving mysteries of planetary system formation," commented Leonardo Testi from ESO, a member of the research team. "Trying this with previous generation telescopes would have needed almost a month of observing -- impossibly long in practice. But, using just a quarter of ALMA's final complement of antennas, we were able to do it in less than one hour!" he said.

In the near future, the completed ALMA telescope will be powerful enough to make detailed images of the discs around Rho-Oph 102 and other objects. Ricci explained, "We will soon be able to not only detect the presence of small particles in discs, but to map how they are spread across the circumstellar disc and how they interact with the gas that we've also detected in the disc. This will help us better understand how planets come to be."

Discovery's Revision3 extends partnership with Fishbowl Media, invests development money

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Revision3, the Discovery-owned online video network, has forged a new partnership with Fishbowl Worldwide Media to distribute and sell advertising for its pets-focused YouTube programming, as well as to fund development of new shows.

The new deal also constitutes a first-look deal, giving Revision3 (and its parent company, which owns TV network Animal Planet) first dibs on all co-developed shows.

Fishbowl Worldwide Media, a studio run by "America's Funniest Home Videos" creator Vin Di Bona and industry veteran Bruce Gersh, already held a deal with Revision3 for its "Cute Win Fail" show, which boasts more than 250,000 subscribers. Now Revision3 will distribute and sell ads for Petsami, Fishbowl's pets-focused channel, which has about 30,000 subscribers.

"We launched Petsami in January as a self-funded pets and animal channel and we spent the year growing an audience around clips - short and fun and funny and snackable," David Beebe, Vice President and General Manager of Fishbowl's digital studio, Told TheWrap. "We started talking to Revision3 about how to expand the audience. With Revision3, there's a lot of opportunity in merchandise and a lot of ideas about how to take the brand beyond and turn it into a franchise."

While Petsami has a small subscriber count, its weekly views are quite high, according to Ryan Vance, Revision3's SVP of programming. It has amassed more than 27 million views since its launch, reflecting that while the channel hasn't convinced viewers to subscribe, many videos have gone viral.

Petsami is bolstered by Fishbowl's massive library of user-generated content, which stems from two decades of submissions to Di Bona's "America's Funniest Home Videos."

YouTube has been investing more in premium content, funding channels that are offering alternatives to the user-generated content that first made the platform famous.

Fishbowl launched this channel without any of YouTube's financial support, but Beebe argued that there is still plenty of space for UGC on the portal.

Fishbowl, armed with development money from Revision3 and a first-look deal, will work with its partner to diversify its line of shows.

"They haven't hit with weekly regular shows with talent that the audience connects with enough to subscribe and watch on a regular basis," Vance told TheWrap. "They have a unique library of all those years of clips from Vin Di Bona Productions' history. Part of what we'll do is help them figure out what are weekly and regular types shows that will get more of a subscriber base growing."

If the show pleases Revision3 enough, it could also find its way on television. Discovery acquired Revision3 in May to help bring the company's digital experts under its TV-focused corporate umbrella. Revision3 can help cross-promote on YouTube and on Discovery, giving more scale to the channel.

"We've had a lot of conversations with Revision3 about how we work with Discovery and Animal Planet to take some of that content and potentially move it to the Animal Planet world," Beebe said.

Capital B: Conner & Jodie's Baby Shower

So I have three siblings- one brother and two sisters :) Needless to say, Conner was a lone ranger growing up! And now he and his wife are having their first baby BOY!! I was SO thrilled when we found out they were having a boy. First, because, well, Boys Rule ;) and second because our family name through my parents will be carried on :) While we were all home during Thanksgiving weekend, we threw a simple family baby shower for them- with the men included!
The simple gift table. I love making diapers cakes- it's been awhile and it was fun! I did this one more simply based on?THIS tutorial. I also made a diaper satchel for them and some fun burp clothes. I got the cutest wipes case from a friend in our ward at a craft fair recently and gave that to them too :)?
We played a quick baby animal matching game using THIS cute sheet. But everyone's favorite part of the whole thing I think was filling out and reading these "Wishes for Baby" cards that I printed HERE. We all got to put our advice in the prompts on these cute little sheets above. It included things like "I hope you ignore_________, "I hope you respect_______," "I hope you aren't afraid ________."

Conner and Jodie took turns reading them out loud.

This ended up being both funny and tender too.

My funny brother-in-law that went on his mission to Japan wrote,

"I hope you learn Japanese," and "I hope you don't forget your name!"

If I ever have a hand in future baby showers, I'll be using these again for sure! :)

Afterwards I tied them all together between some card stock

so they have a little booklet of all our advice :)

I couldn't help but snag a picture of my Grandpa and Grandma Waddoups-

wish they would've been looking, but I'll take it- they look happy :)

My mom made these adorable blankets! The colorful one is all out of minky-?Conner was thinking he might need to keep it for himself it was so soft!?

We are all looking forwards to welcoming a new little one into our family!

Analyst Reports That Black Friday Microsoft Surface Sales Were Dismal

If sales of Microsoft's Surface tablet at the most-visited shopping mall in the world are any indicator of overall sales, Microsoft had a dismal Black Friday.

Piper Jaffray analysts staked out an Apple Store and a Microsoft Store during Black Friday at the Mall of America, the most-visited mall in the world. The analysts spent eight hours at the Apple store, and two hours at the Microsoft Store and found stark differences in sales of the Surface versus the iPad.?According to Fortune, an average of 11 iPads were bought per hour at the Apple store, and not a single Surface was sold when Piper Jaffray was watching.

Foot traffic was 47% lower at the Microsoft Store than the Apple Store. People purchased 17.2 items per hour at the Apple Store; they bought 3.5 items per hour at the Microsoft Store. Those visiting the Microsoft store were interested mainly in Xbox games -- five of the seven items bought during the two hours were Xbox games.

Rainn Wilson mocks 'Two and a Half Men' rant

By Us Weekly

Just like actor Angus T. Jones, Rainn Wilson thinks his TV show is "filth" too! "The Office" star posted a new video on his Facebook page Tuesday, mocking the bizarre rant Jones made Monday against his CBS series "Two and a Half Men."

Joined by his costar Craig Robinson, Wilson, 46, says in the video, "Dwight from 'The Office' is nothing, OK? 'The Office' is nothing, all right? If you watch 'The Office,' please don't watch 'The Office.' I'm on 'The Office.' It's filth. And that filth will rot your brain."

PHOTOS: TV bombshells

But Wilson conveniently mentioned the show's timeslot, adding, "Take it from me, who's on 'The Office,' ?please don't watch it, Thursday nights at 9 on NBC. Do not watch this final season or that filth will rot your brain. Seriously."

On Monday, Jones, 19, gave a very similar testimonial for Forerunner Chronicles, a group linked to the Voice of Prophecy Seventh-Day Adventist church, posted on YouTube -- but he was serious.?

PHOTS: Stars' big breaks

"If you watch 'Two and a Half Men,' please stop watching 'Two and a Half Men,'" the young actor said during his religious testimonial. "I'm on 'Two and a Half Men,' and I don't want to be on it. Please stop watching it, and filling your head with filth."

PHOTOS: Stars who were fired from jobs

"People say it's just entertainment. Do some research on the effects of television and your brain, and I promise you you'll have a decision to make when it comes to television, especially with what you watch," ranted Jones, who has played Jake Harper on the CBS series since its 2003 debut. "Jake from 'Two and a Half Men' means nothing."

Gruffalo Toddler Bed ?111.75 @ Sainsbury's | Baby Freebies ...

Gruffalo Toddler Bed ?111.75 @ Sainsbury'sI know this toddler bed is expensive, but it's a Gruffalo toddler bed so we can't expect anything else - it has, at least, been reduced a little bit: down to ?111.75 from ?149.

However, if you've got a young Gruffalo fan who wants a Gruffalo themed room then, perhaps, everyone in the family can club together and give it as a large combined pressie..? ?It's just an idea and will save you from having to pay for it all yourself.

I find it impossible to get off the fence when it comes to themed toddler beds:

1) Because they're usually so expensive and I don't like to feel I'm being ripped off; and

2) Kids can be fickle! ?What happens when they're most favourite character one week, isn't?their most favourite character the next!?

But maybe I'm just a themed room grouch and my children were themed-room deprived as a result. ?If you're less of a grinch than me, I'd get yourself over to Sainsbury's fairly pronto and order your Gruffalo toddler bed - in my experience, anything Gruffalo (regardless of price) tends to go out of stock pretty quickly.

The Gruffalo toddler bed has side panels to stop your little one falling out of bed, there's a detachable shelf, a cubby hole for stashing books and there are two storage drawers underneath. ?It doesn't come with a mattress, you're going to have to buy one of those separately and it'll need to measure: 140cm x 69cm.

You can't collect this from your local store, but standard delivery is free and will take between three and five working days.

In Defense of Courtship | Psych Central

In Defense of Courtship?A froggy went a-courtin? he did ride. . .?
~ From a 16th-century English folk song

Courtship. It?s such an old-fashioned word that some might find its use today to be quaint. Over the last few decades, courtship has gone the way of scented love letters and rotary telephones. In the push for more freedom of choice in relationships, courtship rituals have almost disappeared from American culture.

Yes, people still like romance ? as in candlelight dinners and walks on the beach ? but the structures and traditions that led from initial attraction to marriage have fallen by the wayside. Many couples move from attraction to renting a truck and moving in, no genuine commitment required. Going ?a-courtin?,? the slow wooing of another person and the gradual development of closeness and affection, seems to have all but disappeared.

The result of this hurried intimacy is a great deal of confusion. When sharing a bed and a life and maybe even a child comes before the sharing of long talks about values and goals and deep explorations of each other?s personality and history, couples often are set up for heartbreak. When things don?t turn out as expected, some couples are able to recognize their mistake, wish each other well and let the relationship go. But others, not at all sure what true commitment is about, fight with each other and with themselves to hang on. Cheating becomes the substitute for the dating and sorting out that should have occurred before moving in. Trust becomes yet another thing to fight about.

Everyone is a victim in this scenario, especially when the couple has had children. The kids end up without the stable home and loving family every child deserves. The women often end up single-mothering and struggling. The men often end up paying child support for children they may seldom see or becoming burdened with unanticipated responsibilities. Sometimes the couple manages to co-parent responsibly and well and remain friends. But even in these best-case instances, both now are looking for partners who may not want to deal with children or continued involvement with an ?ex.? Those without kids are not unscathed either. They have wasted years in a relationship that left them with trust issues and heartache.

All this can be avoided by bringing courtship back into style. I?m not talking about ?courtship? as defined by the Christian right, where couples remain chaste and parents are fully involved in every stage of the developing relationship (although that is certainly one way to go about it). I?m talking about a period of time during which a couple who is attracted to each other takes it slow and gets to know each other well before deciding they are exclusive, before planning to move in, and, by all means, before making a baby. Courtship isn?t dating.

Dating is step 1. Dating means going out with a number of people to see what kind of person is likely to be a fit. Dating is getting to know a number of people you are attracted to by going out for coffee or hanging together with friends or maybe going to a movie or a concert. Picking from a selection of one is unwise, no matter how interesting he or she may be. When the relationship hits a rough patch, as all relationships do, you?ll start wondering about what it would be like if only you had chosen someone more intelligent, more witty, or more competent on the dance floor. Dating a few people before making a choice gives you the chance to see just what kind of person fits your unique personality and your dreams.

Courtship is step 2. Courtship comes when you think you?ve found that special someone. It is the period between your initial choice and committing to making a life together. It?s a time for talks about everything and anything. Long walks and intimate dinners provide the time and the context for exciting, in-depth exploration of another person. It?s a time for learning about each other?s history, beliefs, values, and goals. It?s a time for deciding whether you think similarly about the use of time and money and your expectations about who will do what if you live together. It gives you a chance to experience how each responds to conflict and challenges as well as to easy cooperation.

Larger questions ? such as whether you want children, the role of in-laws in your life, and how decisions will be made ? get visited and revisited as the relationship gains depth and seriousness. Steady affection and care get added to the initial sexual excitement. Each learns how to cherish and nurture the other. When a couple is a good fit, they discover that they both love and like the person they are with and they like who they are when they are together.

Commitment is step 3. Relationships that last, that deepen and ripen into a long marriage and satisfying parenting, are built on a solid foundation. That foundation needs to be built over time and with care. If ?courtship? is too old-fashioned of a term, call it something else, but don?t skip over the process. When that process is done well, both members of a couple become secure in the knowledge that they are each going to give 100 percent to the relationship and to the family they plan to build together. Only then should there be talk of marriage and sharing a home, a life, and a baby.

Mursi opponents clash with police in Cairo

CAIRO (Reuters) - Opponents of President Mohamed Mursi clashed with Egyptian police on Tuesday as thousands of protesters stepped up pressure on the Islamist to scrap a decree they say threatens the nation with a new era of autocracy.

Police fired tear gas at stone-throwing youths in streets off Cairo's Tahrir Square, centre of the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak last year. A 52-year-old protester died after inhaling the gas, the second fatality since Mursi announced the decree expanding his powers and preventing court challenges to his decisions last week.

Tuesday's protest called by leftists, liberals and other groups marked a deepening of the worst crisis since the Muslim Brotherhood politician was elected in June, and exposed a divide between the newly-empowered Islamists and their opponents.

Some protesters have been camped out since Friday in the square, and violence has flared around the country, including in a town north of Cairo where a Muslim Brotherhood youth was killed in clashes on Sunday. Hundreds more have been injured.

Mursi's move has also provoked a rebellion by judges and battered confidence in an economy struggling to recover from two years of turmoil.

Opponents have accused Mursi of behaving like a modern-day pharaoh. The United States, a big benefactor to Egypt's military, has expressed its concerns about more turbulence in a country that has a peace treaty with Israel.

Mursi's administration has defended his decree as an effort to speed up reforms and complete a democratic transformation. Opponents say it shows he has dictatorial instincts.

"The people want to bring down the regime," protesters chanted, echoing slogans used in the anti-Mubarak uprising.

"We don't want a dictatorship again. The Mubarak regime was a dictatorship. We had a revolution to have justice and freedom," said 32-year-old Ahmed Husseini.

The protest was a show of strength by the non-Islamist opposition, whose fractious ranks have been pushed together by the crisis. Well-organized Islamists have consistently beaten more secular-minded parties at the ballot box in elections held since Mubarak was ousted in February, 2011.

Some scholars from the prestigious al-Azhar mosque and university joined Tuesday's protest, showing Mursi and his Brotherhood have alienated some more moderate Muslims.

MORE POWERS

Mursi formally quit the Brotherhood on taking office, saying he would be a president for all Egyptians, but is still a member of its Freedom and Justice Party.

The decree issued on Thursday expanded his powers and protected his decisions from judicial review until the election of a new parliament expected in the first half of 2013.

The New York-based Human Rights Watch said it gives Mursi more power than the military junta from which he assumed power.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon noted judges challenged the decree. However, he told Austria's Die Presse newspaper: "I have also noted that Mursi wants to resolve the problem in a dialogue. I will encourage him to continue to do so."

Trying to ease tensions with judges outraged at the step, Mursi has assured Egypt's highest judicial authority that elements of the decree giving his decisions immunity would apply only to matters of "sovereign" importance. Although that should limit it to issues such as a declaration of war, experts said there was room for a much broader interpretation.

In another step to avoid more confrontation, the Muslim Brotherhood cancelled plans for a rival mass protest in Cairo on Tuesday to support the decree. Violence has flared in the past when both sides have taken to the streets.

But there has been no retreat on other elements of the decree, including a stipulation that the Islamist-dominated body writing a new constitution be protected from legal challenge.

"We came here to reject dictatorship and tyranny," said 50-year-old Noha Abol Fotouh. "The decree must be cancelled and the constituent assembly should be reformed, all intellectuals have left it and now it is controlled by Islamists."

With its popular legitimacy undermined by the withdrawal of most of its non-Islamist members, the assembly faces a series of court cases from plaintiffs who claim it was formed illegally.

The new system of government to be laid out in the constitution is one of the issues at the heart of the crisis.

RAISING CONCERNS

"The president of the republic must put his delusions to one side and undertake the only step capable of defusing the crisis: cancelling the despotic declaration," liberal commentator and activist Amr Hamzawy wrote in his column in al-Watan newspaper.

Mursi issued the decree on November 22, a day after his administration won international praise for brokering an end to eight days of violence between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said on Monday that Mursi had played "an important role" in the truce. "Separately we've raised concerns about some of the decisions and declarations that were made on November 22," he said.

Mursi's decree was seen as targeting in part a legal establishment still largely unreformed from Mubarak's era, when the Brotherhood was outlawed.

Rulings from an array of courts this year have dealt a series of blows to the Brotherhood, leading to the dissolution of the first constitutional assembly and the lower house of parliament elected a year ago. The Brotherhood dominated both.

The judiciary blocked an attempt by Mursi to reconvene the Brotherhood-led parliament after his election victory. It also stood in the way of his attempt to sack the prosecutor general, a Mubarak hold over, in October.

In his decree, Mursi gave himself the power to sack that prosecutor and appoint a new one. In open defiance of Mursi, some judges are refusing to acknowledge that step.

Though both Islamists and their opponents broadly agree that the judiciary needs reform, Mursi's rivals oppose his methods. One presidential source said Mursi wanted to change the make-up of the Supreme Constitutional Court, the body whose ruling that parliament was void led the house being dissolved.

Mursi has repeatedly stated the decree will stay only until a new parliament is elected - something that can happen once the constitution is written and passed in a popular referendum.

Tibetan protests against Chinese rule in new phase

BEIJING (AP) ? Two dozen Tibetans have set themselves on fire in western China this month in a dramatic acceleration of the protests against authoritarian Chinese rule, activist groups say.

The surge in self-immolations, along with an increase in large demonstrations, marks a new phase in the Tibetan protests.

At least 86 people have set themselves on fire since the immolations began in 2009. In a change in recent months, most self-immolators now are lay people ? some of them acting together ? rather than Buddhist monks and nuns who live in tightly monitored monasteries and thus can be more closely watched by authorities.

The protests have also sought to avoid direct attacks on authorities and government property, acts which in the past were used to label them as riots or terrorism, providing an excuse for greater oppression. Despite the altered approach, observers see little short-term possibility of Beijing changing its repressive policies.

"I think the problem will just escalate over time. The government shows no inclination to respond positively to recommendations for reform from the outside or Tibetans," said Michael Davis, a law professor and expert on Tibet at the University of Hong Kong.

In the latest immolation, 24-year-old Kalsang Kyab doused himself with kerosene and set himself alight Tuesday in front of local government offices in Kyangtsa in Aba prefecture, a hotbed of unrest, according to London-based Free Tibet and other groups.

An Aba official said Wednesday he was aware of the immolations but refused to give any details before hanging up.

On Monday, about 1,000 students at a Tsolho Medical Institute staged a bold protest about 900 kilometers (550 miles) to the north in Hainan prefecture in Qinghai province. Riot police fired shots into the air and released tear gas and beat the students with rifle butts, sending 20 students to the hospital, some with serious injuries, Free Tibet reported. Four students were detained as of Tuesday, according to U.S.-funded broadcaster Radio Free Asia.

Tibetan and surrounding ethnically Tibetan regions have been closed off to most outsiders, and firsthand information from the area is extremely difficult to obtain. Authorities have not commented on the protest. Calls to the medical school rang unanswered Wednesday.

Driving the students to protest was a booklet distributed by authorities that derided the Tibetan language as irrelevant, attacked the exiled Tibetan leader the Dalai Lama, and condemned the immolation protests by Tibetans as "acts of stupidity."

The booklet is the latest in a series of perceived slights and intrusive measures by Chinese authorities that have left Tibetans feeling that the culture, language and Buddhist religion that are at the core of their identity are under threat. The feelings have also driven the immolations.

The combination of immolations and large-scale protests is posing a new challenge for security forces, which have been stationed in large numbers in Tibetan areas in recent years.

The surge in self-immolations represents an awareness of the impact they are having among the Tibetan community and internationally, said Robbie Barnett, a Tibet expert at New York's Columbia University. That would likely inspire further protests, increasing the numbers of Tibetans willing to take their lives for the sake of their community, he said.

Most self-immolators have doused themselves with gasoline and set themselves alight after shouting slogans calling for Tibetan independence and blessings for the Dalai Lama, who fled to India in 1959 as Chinese troops ? a decade after they occupied the region ? were crushing an anti-government uprising.

Though protests have flared periodically over the decades, tensions boiled over in 2008, when deadly rioting broke out in the capital, Lhasa, and sparked an uprising across large swaths of ethnically Tibetan areas. Since then, security ? already extremely tight ? has been smothering.

The immolations have galvanized many Tibetans, who see them as selfless acts of sacrifice, making it hard for authorities to denounce the immolators. Similarly, protests by students are hard to demonize since they are typically non-violent and centered on issues such as language rights that are guaranteed under the Chinese Constitution.

While local authorities have cracked down hard following the self-immolations and other protests, authorities in Beijing have said relatively little other than to issue routine denunciations of the Dalai Lama and his followers. That indicates they are uncertain how to respond in a way that would bolster their authority and prevent the acts of defiance snow-balling into a full-blown protest movement, Barnett said.

"This suggests that the Tibetans have found a way of at least getting under the skin of the authorities," he said.

Kosovo veterans demand release of chief charged with war crimes

PRISTINA (Reuters) - About 200 Kosovan former rebel fighters disrupted the launch of a motorway linking their country with Albania on Tuesday, demanding the release of a commander turned government minister who was arrested on war crimes charges last week.

The crowd, mostly Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) veterans, occupied the stage at the opening ceremony in Gjurgjica, central Kosovo, for two hours in a reminder of the fiercely nationalistic emotions that remain more than 13 years after the 1998-99 independence war against Serb forces.

"Today Kosovo will not celebrate until our comrades are released," a protest organizer told the crowd.

A helicopter carrying Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha to the ceremony was turned back while his Kosovan counterpart Hashim Thaci failed to turn up, local media reported.

Former KLA commander Fatmir Limaj, one of Thaci's closest political allies, was charged in 2011 with ordering the killing of two Serb captives and torturing another during the war at a prison close to where the motorway ceremony was staged.

Limaj, who went by the nom de guerre of Celik (Steel), was acquitted a year later. But Kosovo's supreme court, made of a panel of local judges and the country's European Union mission (EULEX), ordered a retrial and he was re-arrested on Saturday.

Kosovo Albanians, who make up more than 90 percent of Kosovo's population, see KLA veterans as their liberators. Arrests of former soldiers have provoked angry protests in the past.

Limaj remains a prominent figure as a member of the Kosovo parliament and deputy leader of Thaci's ruling Democratic Party, which led Kosovo to independence from Serbia in 2008.

Thaci criticised EULEX on Monday, calling Limaj's re-arrest "unacceptable and shameful". The EU representative in Kosovo Samuel Zbogar warned Kosovan politicians not to interfere in the judicial process.

Limaj is also facing corruption charges for the time he was a government minister from 2008 to 2010. He denies all charges.

The 60-km (37-mile) motorway, which gives landlocked Kosovo a faster exit to the Adriatic coast, was opened to traffic without a ceremony.

APNewsBreak: Senators ask Obama to protect river

(AP) ? A group of U.S. senators is asking President Barack Obama for an emergency declaration in an effort to keep barges moving on the drought-stricken Mississippi River.

A spokesman for Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., told the Associated Press that senators from Mississippi River states are seeking a directive that would increase the flow of water from a dam on the upper Missouri River, which flows into the Mississippi. They also want faster removal of rock formations on the Mississippi that impede barge traffic when water is low.

The Army Corps of Engineers began reducing the outflow from an upper Missouri River dam in South Dakota on Friday.

Shippers say the already-low Mississippi River could get so low that barge traffic will be severely restricted or even halted by mid-December.

GL: Iraq Could Dominate Middle Eastern Energy ... - LNG World News

GL Iraq Could Dominate Middle Eastern Energy Output by 2030

Iraq could develop its oil and gas infrastructure quickly enough to dominate Middle Eastern energy output within 18 years, according to a poll of industry professionals at the ADIPEC Exhibition and Conference in Abu Dhabi.

According to the survey held by global independent technical advisor to the oil and gas sector GL Noble Denton, 65% of participants said that Iraq has the potential to develop its energy infrastructure at such a pace that it will dominate the region?s output by 2030.

By contrast, 35% of participants thought that inadequate facilities, a disadvantaged economy and an under-developed regulatory framework ? among other issues ? could prevent the country from expanding its oil and gas footprint at speed.

A study published by the International Energy Agency last month suggests that Iraq has the potential to reshape the global energy industry in the near future. According to the report, an increase in oil exports could add a cumulative USD $5 trillion to the country?s economy over the next two decades; a number that would grow its gross domestic product five-fold.

Moss Daemi, GL Noble Denton?s Executive Vice President for the Middle East and Africa, said: ?Iraq?s oil and gas industry shows huge promise, but the country has some major infrastructure challenges to overcome if it is to realise its potential. The result of this poll shows that industry professionals are extremely optimistic that the country will be able to tackle those issues.

?With the support of experienced international and regional players, there is every possibility that Iraq?s oil and gas industry can develop a significant infrastructure in a short period of time.?

GL Noble Denton also surveyed ADIPEC delegates? opinion over the United Arab Emirates? (UAE) potential to become energy self-sufficient, and whether the country is investing enough money in maintaining the integrity of its assets.

The poll revealed that oil and gas professionals think the UAE will produce enough gas to fuel its growing domestic energy demands by 2030. 81% of participants said that the development of new gas recovery projects will meet the UAE?s rising demand for the commodity and make the country energy self-sufficient by 2030. By contrast, 19% of participants thought that the UAE will need to continue relying on gas imports to sustain domestic energy consumption over the next 18 years.

Industry professionals also believe that the UAE is making the right investments in asset integrity to meet the country?s rising challenges in production from established oil fields. According to GL Noble Denton?s poll, 72% of participants said that the country?s oil and gas industry is spending sufficiently on optimising asset integrity, as facilities are increasingly called upon to operate beyond the lifespan for which they were originally designed. Only 28% of participants thought that the industry is under-investing in asset performance in the Emirates.

Excellent Tips And Advice For Effective E-Mail Marketing - Businesses

Have you used e-mail marketing but not seen the results you were promised? Maybe you are interested in taking advantage of this useful tool, but don?t know where to start? This article was written just for you! The piece that follows includes great tips for composing email messages sure to boost sales and build relationships.

Use passive and active feedback to enhance e-mail marketing efforts. You can get active feedback from your target audience by asking what people think of your emails. Passive feedback is generally not seen by the readers. There are many software tools available that will track the clicked links on your email messages.

The emails you send out should entice your customers. Your customers are more likely to deal with you if there is some type of incentive involved. For example, you can offer free shipping on purchases over a certain minimum dollar amount for those who click on a certain link and place an order on your site.

TIP! Keep the graphics to a minimum in your emails. There are some email services and programs which block or are unable to display images, so you are restricting your audience if you rely on them too heavily.

It?s extremely important to send your marketing emails with a personalized touch. Personalization goes beyond sending an email with the recipient?s name stuck into the greeting line. Use every piece of information your subscribers give you. Separate your subscribers into small groups that have common interests. Create different messages for these different groups.

Change up the format of your emails to give them a touch that?s personal. If you typically use HTML formatting for your messages, then occasionally use plain text formatting instead. If you write these well then you can actually provide a really intimate and simple message that can make people feel comfortable with looking at and purchasing your products.

Be sure that every email address you have is valid. Don?t waste time receiving email addresses, only to get a message that the address was invalid. It simply wastes precious time!

TIP! Using organic marketing strategies is the best way to develop your email list. You should never buy or rent an email address list.

Try out more than one email format. The top of the emails should always contain the most interesting and important information. Try out different approaches to see what gives you the best reaction. After you have identified which format is most effective, you should continue utilizing it. This helps your customers form expectations about future emails and lets them easily find the information they?re looking for.

E-mail marketing is a great way to market your business. Like everything else though, it only works when used in the right way. As a result of reading this article, you can make e-mail marketing a success for your company. Use what you?ve learned here, and the results will make themselves apparent quite quickly.

TIP! Good layout is key to email marketing success. Though graphics may be tempting to use, spam filters are more likely to block them.

Private memorials for 'Dallas' star Larry Hagman

DALLAS (AP) ? "Dallas" actor Larry Hagman will be remembered this week during private, invitation-only services in Dallas and Los Angeles.

The television actor known for starring as slick oilman J.R. Ewing on "Dallas" and Maj. Tony Nelson on "I Dream of Jeannie" died Friday of complications from cancer. He was 81.

Hagman's personal manager John Castonia said Monday that the memorial services will celebrate the Fort Worth native's life. He declined to provide details.

Hagman had been filming the new edition of "Dallas" for the TNT network.

Hagman was diagnosed in 1992 with cirrhosis of the liver and acknowledged he drank heavily for years. In 1995, a malignant tumor was discovered on his liver and he underwent a transplant.

Risk aversity visible in the brain

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? Some people live their lives by the motto "no risk -- no fun!" and relish risks. Others are clearly more cautious and focus primarily on safety when investing and for other business activities. Scientists from the University of Bonn in cooperation with colleagues from the University of Zurich studied the attitudes towards risk in a group of 56 subjects. They found that in people who preferred safety, certain regions of the brain show a higher level of activation when they are confronted with quite unforeseeable situations. In addition, they do not distinguish as clearly as risk takers whether a situation is more or less risky than expected.

The results have just been published in the Journal of Neuroscience.

"We were especially interested in the link between risk preferences and the brain regions processing this information," says Prof. Dr. Bernd Weber from the Center for Economics and Neuroscience (CENs) at the University of Bonn. First, the researchers tested a total of 56 subjects for their willingness to take risks. "In an economic game, the test subjects had a choice between a secured payout and a lottery," reports Sarah Rudorf from CENs, the study's principal author. Those who showed a strong preference for the lottery in this test were categorized as risk takers. Others preferred the secured payout even if the lottery's odds of winning were clearly better. They were put in the risk-averse group.

In risk-averse individuals, certain regions of the brain are activated more strongly

Then the test subjects played a card game in a brain scanner to study their risk perception. Cards carrying numbers from one to ten were shown on the video glasses in front of their eyes. Each time, two cards were randomly drawn. Before the subjects were shown the cards, they were asked to place bets on whether the second card would have a higher or a lower number than the first one. "The statistical probability for either case to occur is always the same: fifty-fifty," says Prof. Weber. "This is important so that all subjects, whether they are risk takers or not, experience risky situations inside the scanner." They were not able to assess their probability of winning their bet until they saw the first card. Here, the researchers found that in the subjects who tended to avoid risks, two specific regions of the brain were activated more strongly than in those who were willing to take risks. These areas are the ventral striatum and the insular cortex. The ventral striatum reacts both to the probability of winning, as well as to how well an individual can predict the outcome of the bet. The insular cortex is particularly sensitive to the risk a situation carries, and for whether it is higher or lower than anticipated.

Risk seekers adjust their strategy after lucky streaks

Sarah Rudorf summarized the results, "Individuals in whom these regions of the brain are activated at a higher level seem to perceive risks more clearly and assess them as more negative than those who are willing to take risks." Risk-averse individuals seem to overestimate the con?sequences of risk, and they did not distinguish as clearly between situations that turned out to be more or less risky than expected. In contrast, the test subjects who tended to take greater risks also focused their behavior more towards the wins and losses, and more clearly changed their strategy after negative situations.

Study is first to show the neurobiological mechanisms

"This study is the first to show the neurobiological mechanisms of how individual risk preferences determine risk perception," says Prof. Weber. "This also has effects on behavior in the areas of finance and health." In a next step, the researchers want to study the consequences these results have on economic decisions such as in the stock market. "This might even allow improving the advising process for investors with regard to their individual risk behavior," says Prof. Weber. And he considers health another important area. Smokers know that what they do is very dangerous, and yet they smoke. "If we learned more about smokers' attitudes towards risk, we might be able to provide information for developing better anti-smoking campaigns."
