The grocery store is always a great marker of what season we?re in. While the craft store has been decorated for Christmas since June, the supermarket produce section truly takes it one holiday at a time. I always know we?re in the throes of fall when the big cardboard bins of nuts show up. Winter was the only time of year we had nuts in the house growing up and I remember sitting on the sofa with my dad trying to use the cracker.

What I didn?t know then that I do now is that we should have had those nuts in the house a lot more often. They?re good for you! Each nut possesses its own nutrition profile of heart-healthy fats, vitamins, minerals, fiber and protein. They?re powerhouse snacks that add texture, flavor and nutrition to any meal. Those are all good enough reasons to stop at the display the next time you?re in the grocery store and take home a bag of fresh in-season:

WALNUTS
The walnut is a superfood that can have an earthy sweetness. A one-ounce serving has 185 calories, and while they may have a significant amount of fat at 18.5 grams, it?s unsaturated fat, including omega-3s, that your body actually needs. Crack a handful of walnuts to make this Whole Grain Stuffing with Apples and Toasted Walnuts for a satisfying seasonal side dish.

ALMONDS
These are a favorite snack around our office. A serving is 23 nuts, which can be quite satisfying for the eyes that are used to seeing larger portions. Their high fiber content makes them great for promoting healthy digestion and keeping you full, while the vitamin E, monounsaturated fats and potassium make them great for heart health. You?ll get a healthy of dose of almonds and walnuts in our Sweet and Nutty Trail Mix.

PISTACHIOS
Compared to other nuts, pistachios are extra-rich in potassium and bone-strengthening vitamin K. By the time you shell 49 pistachios?which is an ounce?your body has time to feel nice and satiated. This year, they gave peanuts (a legume, not a nut) a run for their money in Major League Baseball parks as a healthier snack alternative. The creamy, nutty flavor is perfect as is, in sweet desserts or savory dishes, like this Raspberry Pistachio Crusted Chicken.

PECANS
Whether you say puh-con or pee-can, this is a favorite fall flavor. Forget about using them in a sugar-rich pecan pie?instead, eat them as is for a snack that promotes brain and heart health and supports weight management. The tender texture and woodsy flavor come naturally sodium free and with nearly 20 essential vitamins and minerals. No matter how you say it, that?s a good nut that you can enjoy in this Baked Mashed Sweet Potato with Orange and Pecan side dish.
