Collection highlights experimental printmaking techniques, emotionally turbulent themes

This fall the North Carolina Museum of Art presents Edvard Munch: Symbolism in Print, an exhibition highlighting 26 of the renowned artist?s haunting prints in a variety of graphic media?etchings, drypoints, woodcuts, and lithographs. Often derived from his paintings, Munch?s prints concentrate on intensely remembered moments in his life, compelling viewers to confront themes of loneliness, lust, despair, and death.

image001 N.C. Museum of Art Presents Exhibition of Edvard Munch Prints from MoMAAs Munch explored the emotional terrain of his life, he experimented with printmaking, unafraid to break the rules in order to more sharply realize his artistic vision. Because of the bare honesty of his imagery and his relentless inventiveness, Munch is acknowledged as one of the pioneering masters of modern art whose influence continues to be felt by artists today.

Munch has achieved rock star status with the recent sale of The Scream for almost $120 million. But he is ?much more than the painter of a ludicrously expensive pop icon,? insists John Coffey, deputy director for art at the NCMA. ?Munch is one of the towering image makers of modern times. His works probe the turbulent, even taboo reaches of the human heart with unflinching candor and compassion.?

Describing his artistic inspirations, Munch stated, ?Without anxiety and illness I should have been like a ship without a rudder.? The artist?s anxious relationships?with his family, his lovers, and society as a whole?generate images that transcend one man?s experience and speak to universal human concerns.

Utterly consumed by his subject matter, Munch often created several versions of the same image. For example, the exhibition features two works titled The Kiss, depicting lovers in an embrace.? One print is an etching; the other a woodcut. In the woodcut, the two figures are fused into a single identity?a terrifying notion to Munch. In a pair of woodcuts titled The Lonely Ones, Munch uses the same printing block carved with an image of a couple gazing out to sea. However, each print is inked in different colors, dramatically altering the emotional ?temperature? of the scene.

Far from secondary to his paintings, these dynamic prints are considered his most powerful and potent works. ?Walking around this gallery,? says Coffey, ?you find yourself at the birth of the modern world with all its thrills and apprehensions.?

Drawn from The Museum of Modern Art?s extensive holdings of Munch graphics, this exhibition opens in Raleigh on September 23, 2012, and will be on view through February 10, 2013, in Gallery 2 of the Museum?s East Building. On February 2, 2013, the NCMA features a lecture entitled ?Munch?s Modernity? by Dr. Patricia Berman, professor of art at Wellesley College.

Swimming Is a Beneficial Sport for People with Disabilities ...

cdsessums

It?s possible that swimming is the perfect sport for people with disabilities. The benefits of swimming for these individuals are numerous. What?s more, swimming doesn?t take the hand/eye coordination that other sports require, therefore it can be excellent for someone who is not athletically inclined. For individuals who have disabilities, swimming may be the ideal tool for integrating more physical activity into daily life.

What are the benefits of swimming for someone with a disability?

Swimming?s benefits for an individual with a disability, such as paralysis, an amputation, paraplegia, etc., have been proven through many studies. Just a few of those benefits include:

? Swimming promotes a healthy weight ? As you are probably well aware, regular physical activity can help an individual achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Swimming is an excellent calorie burner and a good exercise for someone with a disability, as it is a ?barrier-free? sport. Has it been difficult in the past to get the amount of exercise you need for a healthy weight? If yes, swimming may be the healthy weight-promoter you have been looking for.

? Swimming can be ?personalized? ? Do you prefer group exercise or independent exercise? Whatever your preference, swimming can be tailored to it. If you love being around people when you work out, you can join a swim class. If you prefer to be alone, you can swim by yourself (if that?s possible)?it?s your choice.

? Swimming is economical ? The great thing about swimming is that it doesn?t usually require the amount of special equipment that other sports do. Usually the only fee for swimming is simply the cost to use a facility, which is generally reasonable. And if you have a friend or family member with a swimming pool, it can even be free!

Visit http://www.swimming-techniques-learn.com/Swimming-for-disabled.html to read about how swimming benefits individuals with particular types of disabilities.

Interested in getting involved in swimming?

Here are some action steps you can take if you have a disability and would like to get started swimming:

1. Call your local health clubs (community and private) to ask about rates of membership. Ask if the rates are cheaper for those who only use the swimming pool. Be sure and ask if the facilities are accessible for people with disabilities.

2. If you use a wheelchair, visit http://www.ehow.com/how_7791485_pool-wheelchair.html to read an article titled ?How to Get Into a Pool from a Wheelchair.? The information in this article can help you go from wheelchair to swimming pool with minimal stress.

Are you a swimmer with a disability?

If you swim fairly regularly and have a disability, we would love to hear your story of how you got started in this accessible sport. Leave a comment and let us know!

Ford Galaxy MPV Spied Hitting Detroit Road

Aug30 FordGalaxy 550x309 Ford Galaxy MPV Spied Hitting Detroit Road

Source: Ford Galaxy | Official Website

Earlier this week, a minivan that appears to be Ford Galaxy MPV was spotted testing the road of metropolitan Detroit. The Galaxy was redesigned last 2010, and this is perhaps what people are seeing on the images.

More Galaxy MPV Spy Shots

Prior to this, a Galaxy MPV mule was spotted last April in Germany, with speculations that the car manufacturer is working on a replacement for the said model.

Although still wearing some of the old skin, the car features visible changes, including wider track and changed nose. The latter is most likely to feature the same sort of Kinetic Design as the 2012 Focus and 2013 Escape or Fusion.

With the look of its twin exhaust and fuel filler cap that is sticking out, it looks like the spotted Ford Galaxy MPV is powered with a new powertrain. It could probably feature a 2.0-liter Ecoboost, detuned to about 240 hp. However, the rest of its powertrain lineup will be borrowed from the European Mondeo.

The Galaxy MPV has been in the market since 2006, and it received a facelift in 2009. With the mule being spotted once again, people could expect that Ford will launch the new model early next year.

Ford Lincoln Car in China

On another news, Ford announced last Tuesday that it will bring the Lincoln brand to China in 2014. Dubbed the company?s luxury brand, the Lincoln cars would be available in the last six months of 2014.

According to Dave Schoch, chairman and chief executive officer of Ford Motor China, ?With Lincoln, we will be expanding our product offering to cover China?s fastest-growing luxury car segment.?

Prior to this, Ford announced that it plans to bring 15 new vehicles to China after three years. However, the latest announcement came even as China?s auto sales decreased due to economic slow down. Furthermore, some Chinese cities limit the number of vehicles because they are concerned with congestion and pollution.

A Chinese industry group revealed that the country?s overall vehicle sales rose to 2.5 percent only last year, compared with its annual increase of over 32 percent in 2010. In relation to this, Ford was able to sell 319,882 units in China within the first seven months of this year. The automaker is also building five new plants in the country, which will double its production capacity to 1.2 million passenger vehicles every year.

As the world?s largest auto market, China has increasingly becoming important to foreign players like Ford.

Celebuzz 101 Hot Bodies: Gretchen Rossi Talks Overcoming Bulimia

With such a fast-paced schedule, how does Real Housewives of Orange County star Gretchen Rossi ever find time to work out?

?Because I travel so much, I end up doing a lot of my workouts on the road,? Rossi told Celebuzz in an exclusive interview. ?I know it sounds silly, but I?ll literally get into a hotel room, pick up the bedside lamp and start doing bicep curls. Sometimes you just have to improvise when you don?t have the time.?

Revealing her ?get fit? tips, Rossi ? who ranked No. 25 on the Celebuzz 101 Hot Bodies countdown ? gave Celebuzz the scoop on her guilty pleasures, her new secret health habit and which housewives she thinks are the hottest. (Hint: She doesn?t share an area code with any of them.)

Read on for the full Q&A.

Celebuzz: What was the ?a-ha moment? in your life that made you want to take health and fitness to the next level?
Gretchen Rossi: I grew up playing soccer and softball, and was a cheerleader. So, I?ve always been extremely athletic. As far as taking my health to the next level, though, it was actually in high school, because I suffered from an eating disorder. When I finally decided I wanted to get healthy and educated about how to stay in shape, I went and got my personal training certificate. I started training other people in college, which really helped me get past my own issues, because I was able to help people in that way. Now, I?m totally capable of knowing how to take care of myself on my own.

Celebuzz: What exercises do you do to stay in shape?
GR: I work so much that I don?t get the consistent time to be in the gym any longer. I do have a trainer that I work with, Ken Rawlins, and he?s amazing. I have him meet me at the house because my schedule is that crazy! He brings a bunch of equipment with him and we do everything from free weights and exercises on the bench to work with rubber bands and these things called gliders that I found. We?ve been using those a lot lately, which has been really fun. Basically, we do a lot of lunges and squats and pushups on a ball.

Celebuzz:?What?s on your workout playlist?
GR:?I definitely work out to music; it?s more motivating. But there are times that you don?t need it. I go on walks on the mornings that I?m up early. The dawn is so beautiful that you really don?t need music. Normally, though, I listen to a playlist of ?ampy,? get-you-going songs. Lately, it?s been my own song ?Unbreakable?; it?s really a great workout song! I didn?t even realize what a great workout song it was until I put it on my iPod; it really gets me going. Also, I absolutely love anything by?Britney Spears,?Lady Gaga?and?Katy Perry.

Celebuzz: What?s your secret for staying fit even when you?re pressed for time?
GR: What I?ve learned with my schedule is that it?s about trying to kill two birds with one stone. I try to improvise and think of new exercises and ways to stay in shape because if I don?t, I would never have the time to stay in shape. I love finding the time to go and do yoga and core Pilates; I love changing it up. I?ve always been really dedicated to making the time to take care of myself.

I love exercising, I?m active everyday whether I?m going for a walk, run, hike or bicycle ride. I?m always at the park running and playing with the dogs. I always try to stay active and moving. I?m not the kind of girl you?re going to find sitting and watching TV. Even if I am watching TV, I?m probably doing my sit-ups at the same time. I?m not very good at staying still unless I have to sleep.

Celebuzz:?Do you diet?
GR:?I think that working out is so important for your heart health and endurance and it feels good to sweat out toxins too. But I truly think that 70 percent of keeping shape is all about what you put in your body to begin with.

Anytime I?ve ever tried to diet in my life, it?s been a disaster, so it?s really about maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Now, I do everything in moderation. If I feel like I really want a pasta dinner, I?ll have my pasta dinner, but I won?t eat the entire thing. Or, if I want an ice cream sandwich one night, I?ll make to be more strict with my diet the next couple days. I?ve realized that when I deprive myself of something that I?m craving, I?ll just want it more and more. Then, I?ll end up binging on something that I didn?t need to if I would?ve allowed myself to have little bits and pieces in the first place.

Celebuzz: What?s your guilty pleasure?
GR: Alcohol will always be on my list. I?m really more of a social drinker and have a cocktail when I?m out on the town on a Friday or Saturday night with friends. And, if I feel like having a bite of dessert when I?m out, I will. I won?t do much more than that, because that?s when you end up eating the entire dessert. I don?t do well with that.

Celebuzz: Do you have any secrets for total body confidence when putting on a bikini?
GR: First and foremost, get a spray tan; that?s the number-one top secret. It really helps to disguise cellulite. Also, little things like a really good moisturizer that makes you look shiny and pretty really helps, too.

Celebuzz: Do you have a secret habit that is part of your healthy lifestyle?
GR: In the last three months, I?ve really been been upping my vitamin intake ? MSM, Grapeseed Extract, things like that. I?m also trying this new product called Play Again, for healthy joints, because when I workout a lot they sometimes ache and hurt. I hate to swallow pills, let alone having to take them; but you really start to see your body change, so it?s worth it.

?

Celebuzz: Besides yourself, which Bravo housewife do you think is the hottest?
GR: I would say that Brandi Glanville is pretty hot. She?s got a really fit body and really tall, skinny legs. But so does Taylor Armstrong. They both kind of have the same type of structure. Even Melissa Gorga! Shoot, I don?t know. Then there?s Joanna Krupa who has a pretty hot, smoking bod. She?s coming out on the new season in Miami. She?s a supermodel, so she would probably win.

Celebuzz: What is your greatest health achievement or milestone thus far?
GR: I would definitely say getting over my eating disorder is one of them. I was bulimic, and it took me a really long time to get over that. To be honest, I don?t think you ever really get over something like that. I think it?s always kind of back there haunting you, but I finally learned to be healthy and confident and secure in my own skin. It wasn?t until five years ago that I finally got to that place and stopped comparing myself to tall, skinny models. I?m 5?5?, and I?m never going to have long, skinny legs. I?m more of an athletic build, and I really learned to appreciate my own body and to be thankful that God blessed me with my proportions. My biggest accomplishment was just becoming secure in my own skin.

Celebuzz: What inspirational advice do you have for readers in order to jump-start a healthy routine?
GR: I think it?s just about maintaining that healthy lifestyle and eating right. I?m lucky to have a great trainer who pushes me. So, I?d say if someone needed extra motivation to get yourself a trainer. Spend the extra money ? you?re worth it.

Ryan takes factual shortcuts in speech

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Laying out the first plans for his party's presidential ticket, GOP vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan took some factual shortcuts Wednesday night when he attacked President Barack Obama's policies on Medicare, the economic stimulus and the budget deficit.

Sen. Rob Portman, a former U.S. trade representative, glossed over his own problems when critiquing Obama's trade dealings with China. A day earlier, the convention's keynote speaker, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, bucked reality in promising that GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney will lay out for the American people the painful budget cuts it will take to wrestle the government's debt and deficit woes under control.

And former senator and presidential candidate Rick Santorum stretched the truth in taking Obama to task over his administration supposedly waiving work requirements in the nation's landmark welfare-to-work law.

A closer look at some of the words spoken at the GOP convention in Tampa, Fla.:

___

RYAN: "And the biggest, coldest power play of all in Obamacare came at the expense of the elderly. ... So they just took it all away from Medicare. Seven hundred and sixteen billion dollars, funneled out of Medicare by President Obama."

THE FACTS: Ryan's claim ignores the fact that Ryan himself incorporated the same cuts into budgets he steered through the House in the past two years as chairman of its Budget Committee, using the money for deficit reduction. And the cuts do not affect Medicare recipients directly, but rather reduce payments to hospitals, health insurance plans and other service providers.

In addition, Ryan's own plan to remake Medicare would squeeze the program's spending even more than the changes Obama made, shifting future retirees into a system in which they would get a fixed payment to shop for coverage among private insurance plans. Critics charge that would expose the elderly to more out-of-pocket costs.

___

RYAN: "The stimulus was a case of political patronage, corporate welfare and cronyism at their worst. You, the working men and women of this country, were cut out of the deal."

THE FACTS: Ryan himself asked for stimulus funds shortly after Congress approved the $800 billion plan, known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Ryan's pleas to federal agencies included letters to Energy Secretary Steven Chu and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis seeking stimulus grant money for two Wisconsin energy conservation companies.

One of them, the nonprofit Wisconsin Energy Conservation Corp., received $20.3 million from the Energy Department to help homes and businesses improve energy efficiency, according to federal records. That company, he said in his letter, would build "sustainable demand for green jobs." Another eventual recipient, the Energy Center of Wisconsin, received about $365,000.

___

RYAN: Said Obama misled people in Ryan's hometown of Janesville, Wis., by making them think a General Motors plant there threatened with closure could be saved. "A lot of guys I went to high school with worked at that GM plant. Right there at that plant, candidate Obama said: 'I believe that if our government is there to support you ... this plant will be here for another hundred years.' That's what he said in 2008. Well, as it turned out, that plant didn't last another year."

THE FACTS: The plant halted production in December 2008, weeks before Obama took office and well before he enacted a more robust auto industry bailout that rescued GM and Chrysler and allowed the majority of their plants ? though not the Janesville facility ? to stay in operation. Ryan himself voted for an auto bailout under President George W. Bush that was designed to help GM, but he was a vocal critic of the one pushed through by Obama that has been widely credited with revitalizing both GM and Chrysler.

___

RYAN: Obama "created a bipartisan debt commission. They came back with an urgent report. He thanked them, sent them on their way and then did exactly nothing."

THE FACTS: It's true that Obama hasn't heeded his commission's recommendations, but Ryan's not the best one to complain. He was a member of the commission and voted against its final report.

___

CHRISTIE: "Mitt Romney will tell us the hard truths we need to hear to end the torrent of debt that is compromising our future and burying our economy. ... Tonight, our duty is to tell the American people the truth. Our problems are big and the solutions will not be painless. We all must share in the sacrifice. Any leader that tells us differently is simply not telling the truth."

THE FACTS: Romney has made a core promise to cut $500 billion per year from the federal budget by 2016 to bring spending below 20 percent of the U.S. economy, and to balance it entirely by 2020.

His campaign manifesto, however, is almost completely devoid of the "hard truths" Christie promises. In fact, Romney is promising to reverse $716 billion in Medicare savings achieved by Obama over the coming decade and promises big increases in military spending as well, along with extending tax cuts for everyone, including the wealthiest.

The few specifics Romney offers include repealing Obama's health care law, cutting federal payrolls, weaning Amtrak from subsidies, cutting foreign aid and curbing the Medicaid health care program for the poor and disabled.

But it'll take a lot more than those steps for Romney to keep his vague promises, which are unrealistic if he's unwilling to touch Medicare and Social Security in the coming decade. Even the controversial budget plan of his vice presidential nominee, Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., largely endorsed by Romney, leaves Medicare virtually untouched over the next 10 years.

What's left for Romney to cut is benefit programs other than Medicare and Social Security, which include food stamps, welfare, farm subsidies and retirement benefits for federal workers. The remaining pot of money includes the day-to-day budgets of domestic agencies, which have already borne cuts under last year's budget deal. There's also widespread congressional aversion to cutting most of what remains on the chopping block, which includes health research, NASA, transportation, air traffic control, homeland security, education, food inspection, housing and heating subsidies for the poor, food aid for pregnant women, the FBI, grants to local governments, national parks and veterans' health care.

___

PORTMAN: "Take trade with China. China manipulates its currency, giving it an unfair trade advantage. So why doesn't the president do something about it? I'll tell you one reason. President Obama could not run up his record trillion-dollar deficits if the Chinese didn't buy our bonds to finance them. Folks, we are as beholden to China for bonds as we are to the Middle East for oil. This will end under Mitt Romney."

THE FACTS: Portman is an expert on commerce, having served as President George W. Bush's trade representative from May 2005 to May 2006. But he didn't fare particularly well in stemming China's trade advantage, either.

Under Portman's watch, the U.S. trade deficit with China soared by 25 percent in 2005, and the next year it climbed more than 15 percent. By contrast, the deficit rose 10 percent over the first three years of Obama's presidency, according to U.S. government figures.

Both the Bush and Obama administrations have launched unfair trade cases against China at the World Trade Organization, but neither has been able to rebalance the relationship.

___

SANTORUM: "This summer (Obama) showed us once again he believes in government handouts and dependency by waiving the work requirement for welfare. Now, I helped write the welfare reform bill. We made a lot crystal clear. No president can waive the work requirement, but as with his refusal to enforce our immigration laws, President Obama rules like he is above the law."

THE FACTS: The administration did not waive the work requirement. Instead, it invited governors to apply on behalf of their states for waivers of administrative requirements in the 1996 law. Some states have complained those rules tie up caseworkers who could be helping clients directly.

In a July 18 letter to congressional leaders, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said that to be eligible for a waiver, governors must commit that their plans will move at least 20 percent more people from welfare to work. Moreover, states must show clear progress toward the goal within a year, or lose the waiver.

"We will not accept any changes that undercut employment-focused welfare reforms that were signed into law fifteen years ago," Sebelius wrote.

Ron Haskins, a former senior Republican House aide who helped write the welfare-to-work law, has said "there is merit" to the administration's proposal and "I don't see how you can get to the conclusion that the waiver provision undermines welfare reform and it eliminates the work requirement."

Haskins, now co-director of the Brookings Center on Children and Families, says the administration was wrong to roll out its proposal without first getting Republicans to sign off on it. But he said the idea itself is one both parties should be able to agree on, were it not for the bitter political divisions that rule Washington.

Musa Publishing: Love of the Written Word

by Sharon Maria Bidwell

I?m here to discuss a friend's point of view -- one that hadn't occurred to me before. I?m going to wander a bit because I?m also talking books, but it all comes down to love for the written word.

Some people love e-books, some loathe them. I know some hate the term ?e-book? and I take that argument on board. A ?book? is a bound set of pages. Maybe it would be more accurate to call the electronic file of a book an e-novel or e-story, because I don?t feel the presentation affects the content. The story ?exists? the moment the author penned it. When one used typewriters or even quills and ink, that didn?t make the story exist any less, although by no definition could hand written or typed pages be called ?books?.

I'm not against electronic files of books, but I still love paper books. Always will. I admit there?s nothing like a physical book that can be held in the hand. It?s nostalgic. If a gift, we may recollect when we opened a brightly wrapped package, the moment we first set eyes on it, felt that fission of pleasure, and spare a moment?s thought for the person who gifted it. An electronic file for the most part lacks the personal touch. An old book, even when it deteriorates with time? Well, those creases in the spine and cover could have been put there over many years of handling and love. I don?t see a scruffy book as one that has necessarily been discarded or ill-used. Also, for someone like me who spends a great deal of time in front of computer screens, then the printed page is a departure from that, although e-readers are improving all the time and this may not always be an issue.

Saying that, there's room for both formats in my life simply owing to practicality. For one thing, I write e-books and would be a total hypocrite to then say I hate them. I don't hate them. I would love to live in the kind of library the Beast gave to Beauty in the Disney film -- just push my bed and a chair and table into the middle, I'll be fine -- but so far I?ve yet to stumble across any enchanted castles even if I?ve found my Prince Charming. I love all sorts of books from the classics, to children?s stories, fantasy and horror, and yes, some romances. I can be fussy about my romances more than any genre, I think, but I do read them along with all the other genres I love -- to call my book collection eclectic is an understatement.

Unfortunately, I simply don?t have room for all the books I would love to read and own. I?m one of those readers, who, if I love a book, I struggle to part with it. I?ve relatives who don?t understand this. They feel a book once read or a film once seen is finished with. The story has been told; the reader/viewer knows what will happen, so why read/watch it again. I understand the point, but I disagree with it. A much-loved experience can be enjoyed again. It can be enjoyed more because often one can miss things on a first pass just as an author can during the writing process.

Among my many ?wants?, I would love to own an entire library of classics. I?ve an abiding love for them. It amazes me when I hear someone say today that they?ve never read any of the literary greats. Black Beauty, Heidi, Pride and Prejudice, Gulliver?s Travels, Oliver Twist...all these books and more were among my childhood reads. I can?t even remember them being referred to as ?classics? -- they were just books and they were adventures. They took me to different worlds and gave me experiences I would never have had otherwise. I read them alongside stories such as The Water Babies, What Katy Did, Ballet Shoes, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and never differentiated. Now they are looked upon as stuffy, and dry, the language outdated. I cannot help feeling that people were better educated, more eloquent and literate when such books were read at a younger age. I was born at a time when almost all parents read to their children, where I was given books for older children than my age, and if I couldn?t read them right away, well I wanted to, and it made me strive to learn. If I didn?t know a word my parents handed me a dictionary and told me to look it up, and yes, I took the time to do so. So these books have remained with me, ingrained.

The electronic format has allowed me to revisit some of these classics I?ve lost through moves, through lack of space. I am grateful. They are adventures and memories revisited, and I can keep them in virtual ?space?. Although I still often buy my favourite authors in print, I have branched out and discovered others owing to electronic formats. I would prefer a world where there wasn?t an argument for or against, but where all can live side by side. In an advanced society, life is about individual choice.

My thinking was personified when speaking with a friend of mine. This friend is in his seventies and he recently bought an e-reader...and adores it. His reason is simple -- he has struggled to read a book for some time. His eyes aren?t quite as they used to be and there may be other factors in his health, but whatever the reason, he can ?see? the words better on his reader as opposed to looking at a printed page. He can also increase the font size if need be, or zoom in. His reader has made his whole reading experience come alive again, and where he had as good as given up reading, or took a long time to struggle through a single novel, he?s reading again...devouring books, and what I saw in his eyes as he told me all this was joy.

So I?m just putting this thought out there for those very much against. Maybe e-books and e-readers aren?t for everyone, and for some they may never be, but I think this proves that it?s pointless to criticize the needs of another person, and that none of us can know what we may one day need ourselves. Should there be anyone saying they?d rather give up reading than commit sacrilege and read electronic ?books?, then I can only think spite. I could never give up reading no matter what. I?ve never heard such venomous arguments over audio books, which many people enjoy who aren?t blind and don?t have seeing difficulties. The arguments come from fear -- a dread that the production of printed books will one day cease, and I understand that emotion well. Without printed books this would be a poorer world, but one cannot ignore the increase of electronic formats -- something I knew would take off long before the first e-reader was even conceived. Simply, there may come a time where e-readers exist alongside things like audio books and are considered as commonplace, where they?re a lifeline for some, and -- just as someone brought books into my life to enrich it -- in my ?book? that makes their existence tolerable and even worthwhile.

When one man is the epitome of calm and the other of chaos, how will they ever admit to loving each other? Can a kiss really change everything?

BLURB:
Friends and actors, Nick and Alex have just made a very successful movie together. The question is what project they should take on next and whether it should be another joint venture or they go their separate ways creatively. The perfect manuscript arrives, one that offers financial security and future opportunities. It may even allow them to one day run their own production company.

For Nick especially, the film is his dream: fantasy with amazing effects, a wonderful script, and a character every actor aspires to play with the director everyone?s begging to work with. There?s one snag: the leading roles feature a gay romance; Nick and Alex will have to get to rather personal on set.

There?s no way Nick can do this movie. He has to refuse but much to his surprise, Alex isn?t willing to take no for an answer. His friend wants this role and as the studio wants both of them or neither, he sets out to talk Nick into it. Nick finally agrees, despite a nosy reporter and his brother turning against him. After all, it?s just pretence. It?s not as if he?s gay and wants to make out with his friend...not until Alex kisses him. Then it really gets interesting.

Boy discovers a bonanza in whale vomit

Daily Echo via BNPS.co.uk

Eight-year-old Charlie Naysmith shows off the piece of ambergris he found on the beach at Hengistbury Head on the coast of southern England.

By Alan Boyle

An 8-year-old boy in England could be up to $63,000 richer, thanks to a piece of solidified whale vomit he picked up on the beach. The chunk may look like a yellow-brownish rock, but it's actually a primo piece of ambergris, an expensive perfume ingredient that is, um, spewed out by whales.

Charlie Naysmith stumbled upon the loaf-sized lump at Hengistbury Head, on the southern coast of England, the Bournemouth Echo reported over the weekend.

As far as Charlie was concerned, it was just a seaside curiosity.?But after doing some research, he and his family determined that the curious lump could be worth somewhere between??10,000 and ?40,000 ($15,850 to $63,350).

"We have discovered it is quite rare and are waiting for some more information from marine biology experts," the boy's father, Alex, told the Echo.

Charlie is reportedly thinking about using the money to build a house for animals. But first, he and his parents might want to get that expert opinion. It turns out that the ambergris trade can get pretty sticky.

'Floating Gold'
Ambergris is a waxy, bile-like substance that builds up in the intestines of sperm whales, apparently to ease the passage of hard material such as squid beaks through a whale's digestive tract. It's often characterized as whale vomit, and although that's fine as a family-friendly description, the stuff is more widely thought to come out of the whale's back end rather than its front end.

Fresh ambergris smells like fresh whale poop, but after a long period of seasoning and hardening in the ocean, it takes on a more delicate odor. It's been variously compared to the aroma of tobacco, the scent of an old wooden church, the fragrance of seaweed, or the smell of rubbing alcohol without the pungency.

"The problem with trying to describe the smell of ambergris is that it really only smells like ambergris," Christopher Kemp, a biologist and neuroscientist who's written a book about the substance, told Bloomberg Businessweek's Eric Spitznagel.

The title of Kemp's book? "Floating Gold."

The scent of ambergris is what makes it so valuable. The substance has been used as an incense, fragrance, flavoring, remedy or aphrodisiac in many cultures, going back to ancient Egypt and China. Herman Melville devoted a whole chapter of "Moby Dick" (Chapter 92) to a discussion of ambergris and how highly prized it was in 19th-century society. "Who would think, then, that such fine ladies and gentlemen should regale themselves with an essence found in the inglorious bowels of a sick whale!" Melville wrote.

More recently, ambergris?? or ambrein, a compound extracted from ambergris?? has been used as a fixative or fragrance amplifier rather than the main ingredient in perfumes. Ambergris' selling price has been quoted at $10 to $50 per gram, depending on the quality of the specimen. (The Echo estimates that the lump found at Hengistbury Head weighs about 600 grams, which suggests that Charlie shouldn't count on building a $63,000 house for his animals.)

Underground trade
The bad news is that the trade in ambergris isn't what it used to be, in large part due to the endangered status of sperm whales. By some accounts, it's illegal to sell the stuff in many jurisdictions, including the United States. There are some traders who dispute that interpretation of anti-whaling laws, but the stigma has driven perfume companies to look for plant-based substitutes such as labdanum,?or synthetic scents such as?Ambrox. (University of British Columbia researchers reported earlier this year that a balsam-fir gene may provide a path to cheaper ambergris-like compounds.)

Maybe it's the whiff of illegality, or maybe it's just that the stuff is so expensive ? but for whatever reason, there's a clandestine character to the modern-day ambergris market. One of the subjects Kemp interviewed for his book is a full-time dealer on New Zealand's North Island, named Adrienne Beuse. Last year, she was involved in a huge ambergris deal that probably saw hundreds of thousands of dollars change hands. "It was a lot of money ? that's all I can say," one of the sellers said.

The way Beuse tells it, New Zealand's choicest hunting grounds for ambergris are ruled by a gang of aggressive collectors and traders ? a gang that doesn't shy away from violence to defend their turf.?"They're called the Beach Mafia up here," Kemp quotes Beuse as saying. "They claim a proprietary interest in the beach. They are defending, I guess in their minds, their territory. And it's worth a lot of money. If a piece worth $50,000 washes up, they don't want anyone else to find it."

It sounds as if Charlie is lucky to live in southern England rather than northern New Zealand. But he better watch his back.

Blue Moon: The Strange Evolution of a Phrase

The next blue moon will occur on the last night of August. Although it will appear no bluer than on any other night, it will nonetheless fit the modern definition of the term by being the second full moon in a calendar month. But this technical meaning of "blue moon" arose fairly recently. The phrase has undergone a strange evolution over the past 500 years.

The notion of a blue moon first appeared in writing in the 16th century, according to folklorist Phillip Hiscock, a professor at Memorial University in Newfoundland who has traced the meaning of the phrase through the centuries. "In the English language, the first use that we have is by Cardinal Wolsey" ? Henry VIII's notorious advisor, Hiscock said. "Cardinal Wolsey writes about his intellectual enemies who 'would have you believe the moon is blue.'"

Aside from the occasional blue-tinged moon that can peak through a volcanic ash cloud, moons almost always hover between white and yellow, and so to call the moon blue was to state an absurdity. "The phrase was a kind of metaphor for absurdity or impossibility," Hiscock told Life's Little Mysteries.

By the 1700s, the phrase had acquired a related meaning: never. "It sort of slipped sideways from impossibility to a temporal notion of impossible in time," Hiscock said.

From there, "blue moon" took a turn for the less stringent, eventually surfacing in 19th-century London as street slang for "a long time." Although it had probably been in use for a while, the slang first appeared in print in an 1821 book about working-class London. "A man is quoting someone on the street in London as saying, 'I haven't seen you this blue moon.' The author of the book gives a little note, and the note tells me this is a phrase he was unfamiliar with," Hiscock said. "The note reads, 'Blue moon ? this is usually intended to imply a long time.'"?[How Colors Got Their Symbolic Meanings]

The next literary reference came in 1869, when, in an autobiographical account of a shipwreck survivor, a man wrote of "that indefinite period known as a 'blue moon.'" Seven years later, the phrase appeared again, this time without explanation or quotation marks. Discussing diet, a character in an 1871 book admits to eating "a fruit pastry once in a blue moon."

The lack of explanation "shows clearly that, at least in Britain where these quotes come from, that phrase seemed to reach popularity in the middle part of that century between the '20s and '70s," Hiscock said.

Although no one knows how or why the phrase "blue moon" became harnessed to rare lunar events, we know where it happened: the state of Maine.

Because each season is three months long, seasons typically have three full moons. However, on occasion, the dates will align in such a way that a season will experience four. Farmers' almanacs published in Maine began calling the third?full moon?in a season with four a "blue moon."

Theories abound as to why the publishers did this. Some say that third moon was traditionally called "blue" in the Czech language, while others think the term comes from the French phrase double moon, "la deux lune," which sounds like blue moon. Other theories hold that almanacs started out printing the various types of moons in different colors, while still others assert that those third moons were bad luck, thus rendered blue. But Hiscock thinks the simplest explanation may be the most compelling: "It seems to me absolutely possible that someone just took the English meaning, 'now and again,' and assigned this astronomical meaning."

The final step in the evolution of the phrase (so far, at least) resulted from a journalist's error. In 1946, the amateur astronomer James Hugh Pruett wrote an article about the term "blue moon" for Sky & Telescope magazine. Whether purposefully or by mistake, he simplified the usage of the term found in the Maine Farmers' Almanac, and defined a blue moon as the second full moon in a calendar month???a coincidence of dates that occurs about every three years. By the time Pruett's error was discovered half a century later, the simple definition had stuck.?[Why Does the Moon Look Bigger on the Horizon?]

Blue moons clearly have a rich history, but Hiscock thinks they have only now entered their heyday. As reflected in the number of businesses and products that have adopted "Blue Moon" for their name, "over the past quarter-century this term has really captured the imagination of North America and beyond," he said. "I think the phrase has a real hook to it for people, and I suspect that's because we are essentially a society of people alienated from nature. We grow up in cities and live lives that have nothing to do with the?physical seasons?or astronomical cycles, and when we hear things that connect us to those things we often become very excited."

He added, "Blue moon links people in a way that a lot of other things cannot. It feels old-fashioned while at the same time right here and now. It reduces that alienation from nature for many people."

Oil rises as storm barrels thru Gulf of Mexico

The price of oil rose to near $97 a barrel on Monday as Tropical Storm Isaac barreled across the Gulf of Mexico and toward the U.S. mainland, picking up strength and threatening oil and refining operations. An explosion at a refinery in Venezuela also pushed prices higher.

By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark crude for October delivery was up 79 cents to $96.94 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 12 cents to finish at $96.15 per barrel on the Nymex on Friday.

In London, Brent crude rose 54 cents to $114.13 on the ICE Futures exchange.

Oil analyst Stephen Schork said in an email commentary that he expects "much higher volatility this week" due to Tropical Storm Isaac, which weather forecasters said would pick up strength before striking as a Category 2 hurricane somewhere between New Orleans and the Florida Panhandle on Wednesday.

Schork worries that the storm will be a repeat of Hurricanes Katrina in 2005 and Gustav in 2008, damaging Gulf refineries and pipelines and disrupting oil tanker traffic.

As of Sunday, work had been suspended on rigs accounting for 24 percent of daily oil production in the U.S. portion of the Gulf and eight percent of daily natural gas production there, the federal Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement said.

Another factor pushing up prices was an explosion and fire that shut down operations at the Amuay refinery in western Venezuela, said Victor Shum, energy analyst at consultancy Purvin & Gertz in Singapore.

Amuay is among the world's largest refineries and is part of the Paraguana Refinery Complex, which also includes the adjacent Cardon refinery. Together, the refineries process about 900,000 barrels of crude per day and 200,000 barrels of gasoline.

In other Nymex trading, gasoline futures advanced 7.77 cents to $2.9882 per gallon, while heating oil rose 4.04 cents to $3.1591 per gallon. Natural gas rose 5.2 cents to $2.754 per 1,000 cubic feet.

'Cyborg' Tissues: Merging engineered human tissues with bio-compatible nanoscale wires

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Harvard scientists have, for the first, time created a type of "cyborg" tissue by embedding a three-dimensional network of functional, bio-compatible nanoscale wires into engineered human tissues.

As described in a paper published August 26 in Nature Materials, a multi-institutional research team led by Charles M. Lieber, the Mark Hyman, Jr. Professor of Chemistry at Harvard and Daniel Kohane, a Harvard Medical School professor in the Department of Anesthesia at Children's Hospital Boston developed a system for creating nanoscale "scaffolds" which could be seeded with cells which later grew into tissue.

Also contributing to the work were Robert Langer, from the Koch Institute at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Zhigang Suo, the Allen E. and Marilyn M. Puckett Professor of Mechanics and Materials at Harvard's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

"The current methods we have for monitoring or interacting with living systems are limited," said Lieber. "We can use electrodes to measure activity in cells or tissue, but that damages them. With this technology, for the first time, we can work at the same scale as the unit of biological system without interrupting it. Ultimately, this is about merging tissue with electronics in a way that it becomes difficult to determine where the tissue ends and the electronics begin."

The research addresses a concern that has long been associated with work on bioengineered tissue -- how to create systems capable of sensing chemical or electrical changes in the tissue after it has been grown and implanted. The system might also represent a solution to researchers' struggles in developing methods to directly stimulate engineered tissues and measure cellular reactions.

"In the body, the autonomic nervous system keeps track of pH, chemistry, oxygen and other factors, and triggers responses as needed," Kohane explained. "We need to be able to mimic the kind of intrinsic feedback loops the body has evolved in order to maintain fine control at the cellular and tissue level."

Using the autonomic nervous system as inspiration, Bozhi Tian, a former doctoral student under Lieber and former postdoctoral fellow in the Kohane and Langer labs, and collaborator Jia Liu worked in Lieber's lab at Harvard to build mesh-like networks of nanoscale silicon wires -- about 30 -- 80 nm in diameter -- shaped like flat planes or in a reticular conformation.

The process of building the networks, Lieber said, is similar to that used to etch microchips.

Beginning with a two-dimensional substrate, researchers laid out a mesh of organic polymer around nanoscale wires, which serve as the critical nanoscale sensing elements. Nanoscale electrodes, which connect the nanowire elements, were then built within the mesh to enable nanowire transistors to measure the activity in cells without damaging them. Once complete, the substrate was dissolved, leaving researchers with a net-like sponge or a mesh that can be folded or rolled into a host of three dimensional shapes.

Once complete, the networks were porous enough to allow the team to seed them with cells and encourage those cells to grow in 3D cultures.

"Previous efforts to create bioengineered sensing networks have focused on two-dimensional layouts, where culture cells grow on top of electronic components, or on conformal layouts where probes are placed on tissue surfaces," said Tian. "It is desirable to have an accurate picture of cellular behavior within the 3D structure of a tissue, and it is also important to have nanoscale probes to avoid disruption of either cellular or tissue architecture."

Using heart and nerve cells, the team successfully engineered tissues containing embedded nanoscale networks without affecting the cells' viability or activity. Using the embedded devices, they were able to detect electrical signals generated by cells deep within the tissue, and to measure changes in those signals in response to cardio- or neuro-stimulating drugs.

Researchers were also able to construct bioengineered blood vessels, and used the embedded technology to measure pH changes -- as would be seen in response to inflammation, ischemia and other biochemical or cellular environments -- both inside and outside the vessels.

Though a number of potential applications exist for the technology, the most near-term use, Lieber said, may come from the pharmaceutical industry, where researchers could use the technology to more precisely study how newly-developed drugs act in three dimensional tissues, rather than thin layers of cultured cells. The system might also one day be used to monitor changes inside the body and react accordingly, whether through electrical stimulation or the release of a drug.

Bezalel Books Blog and Banter: Bi-Locating and Other Necessary Motherhood Skills

Bi-Locating and Other Necessary Motherhood Skills

I glanced at the clock when I heard my husband say to my oldest son, ?Call me when you get home.??Where is he?? I asked. When my husband replied, ?He?s on his way home from work,? my stomach began churning. Not the hunger-type churn but the worried-mother-type churn. Our son had purchased a home just months before and was still getting a handle on things but between work and other demands, it wasn?t easy. My husband and I?and his brothers?had all helped out with painting, cutting the lawn, some electrical and lighting things and so on.It took all our willpower (my husband?s and mine) not to completely take over, but to just be available to help if and as needed. We wanted to take care of our son, get him set up in his new house. Mostly, I wanted?needed, really?to know that he was ?okay? and that he wouldn?t be overwhelmed by the demands of new home ownership. The point of the call was to set up a date and a time that my husband would be able to come and help with another task. To hear that my son wasn?t yet home from work for the day brought me to full attention. My brain went into mother-calculation mode. It is the only time my brain can do any math. Okay, he started his day with the sunrise and will end it with the sunset. Given he needs to now cook himself dinner?that means he?s operating on five hours of sleep. By now my stomach is in full blown acrobatic action. I?m talking Flying Wallendas. I?m worried about what he will make himself for dinner and want to drive the 25 minutes away to greet him with warm food.Every cell in my body is aching to go take care of him. The show on the television in front of me no longer has meaning. I can hear the words but don?t understand them as my mind creates a plan to get dinner to my son. My body sits on the couch but it is imagining the scenario in which I will feed my son. I want to bi-locate like never before.Of course I know that this won?t happen?neither the bi-locating nor the actual delivery of food. I know that I have to let my son be and let him learn and grow. I know what my job is now?even as I ache to tuck him in just one last time.I am so proud of him that sometimes I find myself crying. They are tears that remember that little boy who loved to sit and watch Mr. Rogers and eat dry Cheerios. They are tears that recall the day he received his college acceptance letter. Tears rim my eyes when I think about my son going off on his first job interview. My tears are those of gratitude that God has allowed me to know this incredible young man?an amazing son, a giving brother, a loving grandson?and has allowed me to be part of his journey.

Simplifying genetic codes to look back in time

ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2012) ? Tokyo Institute of Technology researchers show simpler versions of the universal genetic code can still function in protein synthesis. In addition to understanding early primordial organisms, the research could lead to applications preventing non-natural genetically modified materials from entering the natural world.

Daisuke Kiga and co-workers at the Department of Computational Intelligence and Systems Science at Tokyo Institute of Technology, together with researchers across Japan, have shown that simpler versions of the universal genetic code, created by knocking out certain amino acids, can still function efficiently and accurately in protein synthesis [1].

The researchers conducted experiments altering the genetic code in a test tube. They removed the amino acid tryptophan and discovered that the resulting simplified code could still generate proteins as before.

By knocking out individual amino acids and observing the effects, scientists will be able to understand how early primordial organisms may have functioned and evolved. There will be also numerous applications for simplified genetic strains in laboratory experiments, which could potentially prevent non-natural genetically modified materials from entering the natural world.

Background and future developments

Daisuke Kiga and co-workers of the Department of Computational Intelligence and Systems Science at Tokyo Institute of Technology, together with researchers across Japan, have shown that simpler versions of the universal genetic code -- created by knocking out certain amino acids -- can still function efficiently and accurately in protein synthesis. The researchers conducted cell-free experiments altering the genetic code.

All current life forms on Earth have 20 amino acids in their genetic code. However, scientists believe that this was not always the case, and that organisms evolved from simpler genetic codes with fewer amino acids. Amino acids are linked in accordance with codons -- a 3-letter combination of the four base nucleotides (G, A, T and C) in a genetic code. There are 64 possible codons, and so most amino acids are produced by several different codons, except for tryptophan and methionine, which are generated by just one codon each. Tryptophan is thought to be the most recent amino acid to become part of the universal genetic code.

Kiga and his team took the codon for tryptophan, and reassigned it to code for the amino acid alanine instead. They discovered the resulting simplified code could still generate proteins as before. The researchers also reassigned another codon originally for the amino acid cysteine and replaced it with serine. This simplified code without cysteine was able to synthesize an active enzyme.

By knocking out individual amino acids and observing the effects, scientists will be able to understand how early primordial organisms may have functioned and evolved. There are also numerous applications for simplified genetic codes in laboratory experiments and clinical trials.

Before emergence of the current universal genetic code, primitive organisms that may have used only 19 amino acids could benefit from horizontal gene transfer, where cells transfer genetic material between one another. This is a key method used by bacteria to develop resistance to drugs. An organism with the current universal genetic code for 20 amino acids would have competitive advantages in its ability to synthesize proteins, but could not engage in genetic transfer with the rest of the population. Only when a suitably large gene pool of organisms with 20 amino acids is available could horizontal transfer occur between these life forms and they could then thrive. This implies that organisms with a simpler genetic code could be used as a barrier in laboratory experiments, preventing new genetically modified strains from escaping to the natural world.
