(AP) ? Mitt Romney's presidential campaign is telling seniors in a new television ad that President Barack Obama cut billions from Medicare to pay for his health care program.

An announcer in the ad, released Tuesday, tells older voters they paid into Medicare for years and that the health care program should be there for them in retirement.

The ad says Obama has cut $716 billion from Medicare to pay for Democrats' health care overhaul.

The spot also says Romney and running mate Paul Ryan would protect Medicare benefits and put the program on solid footing for future generations. The campaign would not provide details on where the ad is running.

Romney announced Ryan as his running mate over the weekend. Democrats quickly criticized Ryan's budget proposal, saying it would end Medicare.
