Samsung probe Galaxy S3 ?explosion? in car

Saturday, June 23, 2012

Samsung has confirmed it is investigating what led one of its latest and most popular smartphones to burst into flames while its owner was driving in Dublin.

The owner went online to reveal that he was driving along with the Galaxy S3 model in a car mount "when suddenly a white flame, sparks, and a bang came out of the phone".

Posting on boards.ie with the username dillo2k10, the person wrote: "I pulled in to look at my phone, the phone burned from the inside out. Burned through the plastic and melted my case to my phone.

"The phone kept working but without any signal."

Dillo2k10 then brought the phone to the retailer but said he was told they could not replace it, that they had to send it off to be checked first.

"No even replacement phone, left with nothing," he posted. "The phone was destroyed and it slightly burned a piece of plastic on the inside of my car.

"And they are refusing to give me a replacement they had to send it off." He said there was "probably nothing I can do, but I?m really annoyed".

"That could have burned the side of my face or through my pocket and my leg, or set fire to my bed. It?s very dangerous."

He posted a later comment saying Samsung?s head of customer services had contacted him and had given him a replacement phone.

"Even said he would send me out some free stuff," he said.

"There is no confirmation that it was a fault with the phone.

"It may actually have been caused by a combination of my car mount and my car?s heating system.

"Just delighted to have my Galaxy back."

Yesterday the company told the Reuters news agency it was still looking into the reported incident.

"Our initial investigation found no fault with the phone, but we?ll conduct further investigations to decide the exact cause of the problem," said spokesman James Chung.

He said the result of those investigations could be released as early as next week.
